Description
The Trek Checkpoint Al 4 is a true all-rounder. The frame is from the Checkpoint gravel bike series, but with the 32 mm slick tires it's also fast on asphalt. The Checkpoint AL 4 is very suitable as a winter road bike, fast commuter bike, and of course as a gravel bike.
The Checkpoint's frame is made of nicely finished aluminium and has a sporty but also comfortable sitting position for longer rides. As the front brake's cable also runs through the front fork, this frame has an ever nicer finish than the more expensive ALR version. This AL 4 also has trough axles for direct steering. The frame has mounts for a carrier or mudguards. You can easily convert this Checkpoint into a commuter or travel bike.
The Shimano Tiagra groupset has had several upgrades in recent years and now uses many of the same techniques as the higher ranked groupsets. The shifting performance is therefore top notch. The hydraulic Shimano disc brakes have a lot of braking power and are also very pleasant to apply.
The Bontrager Affinity wheel set itself is extra wide, so the wider tyres are well supported. This benefits the steering characteristics. With the 32 mm tyres, this Trek Checkpoint is fast but comfortable on paved roads, and also very suitable for unpaved paths. If you ride on unpaved roads a lot, it's better to upgrade the tyres to 35 or 38 mm. In any case, the frame has enough space to fit them in.
In short: The Trek Checkpoint AL 4 is an ideal gravel bike for riders looking for a bike that's very versatile.
