Compound:
Brake pads with different compounds are available for these brakes. Different compounds have different qualities and properties so can be used in different conditions. Below, the different brake pads are explained to help with this choice.
Soft (Organic):
Organic brake pads consist of soft materials. As such, these brake pads give excellent controllability and braking power. Due to the soft compound, this pad also engages quickly. In addition, the organic compound ensures that these brake pads make little noise while driving.
The disadvantage of organic brake pads is that they are less able to withstand higher temperatures that can occur during long descents, for example. Also, organic brake pads wear harder if you ride a lot in muddy conditions.
In short, if you use your bike mainly in summer and ride mainly in the Netherlands, these organic brake pads are the perfect choice. However, if you use the bike mainly in winter, or if you regularly go to hilly/mountainous areas, then it is better to go for Semi-Metallic brake pads.
Hard (Sintered):
In sintered brake pads, the compound consists of resin mixed with metal particles. This compound is therefore very hard and wear-resistant. These brake pads are also very resistant to the high temperatures that can occur especially during long descents. The disadvantage is that these brake pads engage less quickly than organic or semi-metallic brake pads and make more noise during braking.
These brake pads are therefore very suitable if you cycle in very muddy conditions and have to brake a lot. This is especially common during very muddy tours in hilly/mountainous areas. These brake pads are also extremely suitable with downhill and enduro use.
Attention:
Manufacturers use different fits. So pay close attention to whether the shape of the brake pad in the picture matches your current brake pad. If you do not know what shape you have, scroll to the bottom of this page. There, each pad is described for the type of brake it is compatible with.
