Pros & Cons
Pros & Cons
- Unrivalled shifting performance in terms of speed and shifting under load.
- Powerful braking and improved control to prevent sudden gripping of the brakes.
- Semi-wireless, no more cables between the shifters and front derailleur. Easier mounting and less chance of cable breakage.
- You can bleed the brakes without unscrewing the caliper from the frame. A time saver!
- One time only positioning of the derailleurs and you are ready for the rest of your road bike's life.
- Dura Ace comes at a much higher price than the Ultegra and will not be affordable to all.

The shifting performance is unparalleled, even under load. The braking system has also been improved. The space between the brake discs and the brake pads has been increased by 10%. As a result, the brake discs are less likely to rub against the car under all conditions. Heat tolerance has also been increased, reducing the likelihood of annoying noise on descents.
Shifters
The ergonomics of the shifters have been further optimised with feedback from riders on various professional cycling teams. The shifter covers have been optimised for grip, and it is easier to shift between different hand positions. It is also easier to adopt different hand positions. The stroke of the brake levers is adjustable. The height of the DI2 buttons has also been increased by 1.5 mm, for the up and down shift. This makes it easier to operate the buttons correctly even with gloves or in the cold.
Drivetrain
The shifting speed of the Shimano Dura Ace R9250 12 speed rear derailleur has increased by 58%. The front derailleur shifts 45% faster than Shimano Dura Ace R9150 derailleurs. The shifting speed under load is also very impressive. The junction box is integrated in the rear derailleur, saving you a lot of space on the handlebars and bottom bracket. The groupset can also be set up and recharged via the rear derailleur.
Brake system
The disc brakes have been upgraded. The Dura Ace caliper is a one-piece CNC machined caliper. There is 10% more space between the brake pads and the brake discs. This has ensured that the brakes do not, or hardly, rub when you are not braking. Nothing is more annoying than a brake disc catching up during a climb or a sprint. Braking power and dosage have also been noticeably improved. The maximum heat tolerance before deformation can take place has been improved by 66%.
The Shimano Dura Ace 9200 DI2 Disc 12 speed groupset is a semi-wireless groupset, meaning there is only a cable connection between the front derailleur, rear derailleur and battery. This makes assembly much easier. A fully charged battery will last for about 1000 kilometres before you need to recharge it. The shifters both contain a button cell battery that lasts about 1.5 years before needing to be replaced. It also eliminates the need for a junction box, allowing you to set up and charge the groupset via the rear derailleur.
Shimano DI2 app
All adjustment options, such as assigning shift buttons, shifting way or adjusting shifting speed, can be done through the Shimano DI2 app. The function of the shift buttons is individually adjustable. The synchronized shift or semi-synchronized shift, in which the front derailleur automatically shifts to ensure the ideal chainline, also makes a return in this groupset.
Servowave
The brakes use Shimano's Servo Wave Action. This technology means that the speed at which the pistons move in decreases as the pistons get closer to the disc. This maintains the torque Shimano brakes are known for, but greatly improves the brake delivery.
Cassettes
Hyperglide cassettes are available in different ratios. These ratios all feature the 'sweet spots', on the 6th, 7th and 8th sprockets. 12 speed makes it possible to keep the cogs that are most comfortable to ride at medium speeds despite large ratio differences. The cassettes come with the HG mounting pattern, which is also compatible with all Shimano HG 11 speed bodies.
Front derailleur
The front derailleur shifts incredibly smooth and fast; much faster than its predecessor. Even under heavy load, it shifts smoothly. The front derailleur is more compact and lighter. The frontal area has been reduced by 33%, is 96 grams lighter and is suitable for chainrings from 50T to 54T.
Brake maintenance
Maintenance of the brakes has been simplified. It is possible to bleed the brake without removing the caliper from the frame, thanks to a separate bleed port and rotary valve. A new funnel and spacer for bleeding the caliper help optimise the bleeding process.
