From what age can I take out insurance?
You have to be 18 or over to take out bike insurance. Parents can insure the bikes of their children.
Mantel Bike Insurance lock requirements
All bikes insured through Mantel Bike Insurance must always be attached to a fixed object with one lock. You can, for example, use a chain lock, cable lock or U-lock to attach the bike to a lantern pole or bike rack. This requirement also applies to road bikes, gravel bikes and mountain bikes.
City bikes and e-bikes are further required to be locked up with a second lock as well. A frame lock can be used as a second lock. Always use a frame lock in combination with a chain lock, U-lock or cable lock. Locking your bike with a frame lock only is not sufficient.
Bike lock requirements:- Both locks must have a price of purchase of at least €35;
- Both locks must have an ART certificate of 2 stars at minimum. This certificate indicates that the lock adheres to certain safety standards;
- A plug-in chain used in combination with a frame lock is not considered a second lock;
- You may use locks you already own, but these have to be in good condition and may not be older than 3 years at the moment of purchasing bike insurance. You have to be able to prove this with proof of purchase of the locks.
In which way do you have to secure your bike?
Your bike must always be locked up, even when stored indoors, for example in a shed, basement or garage. When parked outdoors, always attach your bike to a fixed object, like a lantern pole, bike rack, etc. In case of theft, you have to be able to hand over all the keys of your bike locks.
What do you need to know about GPS trackers?
You do not need a GPS tracker for your bike to be eligible for Mantel bike insurance. Pre-installed GPS trackers, or trackers added later, can be insured under Mantel bike insurance.
What is the insured value?
When you insure your bike, you and the insurer agree on an amount for which the bike is insured. We call this amount the insured value. For the wrong value, we take the recommended retail price as a starting point.
Why the recommended price?- New bike: If your bike is stolen, you usually get enough money to buy a new, similar bike.
- No surprises: Even if you bought your bike on sale, you will pay as much premium as someone who paid full price. But if your bike is gone, you will get the full value back.
Example: You buy a bike for €500 on sale, but the recommended retail price is €700. You insure your bike for €700. If your bike is stolen, you get €700 paid out, even though you only paid €500.
Theft of your bike, or parts of your bike, is covered by Mantel Bike Insurance Theft or Theft & Damage. Any damage caused by the theft is also covered.

Deductible in case of damage
| Bike type | In case of damage |
|---|---|
| Road bike or mountain bike | 20% of the damage incurred, at minimum €50 per claim |
| E-bike/City bike | €25 deductible per claim |
| E-bike/City bike battery | €25 deductible per claim |
What is the maximum repair cost covered in case of damage?
Your insurance will cover bike repairs up to the price of purchase according to your bike's receipt, but at most up to the agreed insured value of €15,000. Should the repair costs be higher than the price of purchase of your bike, the bike is considered total loss. In this case, the insurer will reimburse you for the costs of a new bike of a similar type and quality (new value). Refer to the terms and conditions of the insurance policy for more details.
It is important to take the following steps in case of bike theft:
Contact the police as soon as possible and file an official report. Make sure you know your unique case number
If you have a bike with a GPS tracker, notify your GPS tracker provider about the theft. They can help you track down your bike.
You can do this by contacting customer support or in one of our stores. Make sure to include a copy of the police report, as well as clear photos of your original bike lock keys. Photograph the front as well of the back of your keys of each lock separately. Make sure to keep the keys and any accompanying accessories, like the charger, until the insurance claim has actually been settled. If the photos you include are not clear enough, we'll ask you to send us the keys. In this case, you will have to pay for shipping, and shipping the keys is at your own risk.
We'll pass your claim onto the insurer. We'll notify you at once when we receive an answer from the insurance company. This takes a maximum of 10 working days.
You can choose a new bike at Mantel, worth the same amount as your stolen bike, if your claim is accepted.
If you've chosen damage coverage, we'll put your claim through to the insurer. In order to do this, we'll need a clear description of the cause of the damage, and an appraisal report. This report can be made in one of our shops. In this case, the costs of the report will be waived if the decision is made to perform the repairs. You can also have an appraisal done by your local bike shop. We can submit the claim to the insurance company with this information.
If the claim is accepted and the cost of the damages has been determined, the claim will be finalised by the insurer within 10 working days. Once finalised, simply make an appointment in our workshop to get your bike fixed.
Can the insured amount be paid into my bank account?
No, this is not possible in case of theft. Mantel Bike Insurance pays out in kind. This means you'll be allowed to select a bike of the same value as the stolen bike at Mantel. The value, in this case, is the insured value of your bike at the moment of purchase.
If your bike breaks down at the side of the road, you can arrange for roadside assistance or transport to your home yourself. If you've chosen Mantel Bike Theft & Damage insurance, we'll reimburse you for the costs of being picked up, up to at most €150 per incident. You may have at most one person with you. You can claim this reimbursement twice a year at most.
