Cycling Computers & GPS Selection Guide

Are you looking for an odometer, a GPS bike computer or a bicycle navigation system?

An odometer has a sensor to measure your speed and calculate your total riding distance. However, an odometer has no function to transmit the measured data at the end of the ride (e.g. to a phone or computer). A GPS bike computer retrieves its data via GPS, which means that it does not need a sensor to measure your speed. You can, however, connect a speed sensor and other sensors for more precise measurements. In addition, the route travelled can be read out afterwards, and in many cases you can navigate without maps with a breadcrumb trail. A bicycle navigation system has the same features as a bicycle computer with GPS, plus the function to follow a predetermined route with a map and on-screen instructions.

What Garmin cycle computers are there?

Garmin offers a wide range of cycle computers, including popular models such as the Garmin Edge series. Each model is designed to meet the specific needs of different cyclists. For example, there are compact and simple bike computers with basic functions such as GPS tracking, distance measurement and live tracking. Ideal for recreational cyclists who want to track essential data without too many bells and whistles. For serious cyclists, the Garmin Edge 540 and Edge 840 offer more advanced features. These models have comprehensive performance analysis, including VO2 max estimates, advanced training plans and integration with power meters. They also feature colour screens and touchscreen controls for an intuitive user experience. Moreover, these models are also available as Solar variants. These can recharge themselves when you go on a longer trip, for example.

For adventurous cyclists who like to go off-road, Garmin offers the Edge Explore and Edge 1040. These models feature maps of popular cycling routes and feature Trendline™ Popularity Routing, allowing users to discover the most travelled trails. They also have longer battery life to support long rides. Regardless of the model cyclists choose, they can count on durability, water resistance and ease of use from Garmin bike computers. With regular firmware updates, cycling computers stay up-to-date and constantly add new features to enhance the cycling experience.

What are the benefits of Garmin cycling computers?

Garmin bike computers offer a wide range of benefits that can help cyclists of all levels improve their rides. One of the key benefits is advanced GPS functionality. This is especially useful for cyclists who want to explore new routes or prefer adventurous off-road rides. Moreover, Garmin cycling computers offer comprehensive performance analysis. With features such as speed, distance, altimeters and heart rate monitoring, cyclists can track their progress and optimise their training. Garmin also offers advanced training plans and virtual courses, allowing cyclists to push their limits and improve their performance. Another advantage of Garmin bike computers is their seamless connectivity with smartphones.
