Description

Description

The power of the CrankBrothers Mallet 1 pedals is that you can use it with your clipless shoes and that you can use it as a full worthy flat pedal. The clipless pedals are inspired by the famous Eggbeaters. Unbeatable in the mudd. Clipping-in always works, even during the toughest and roughest conditions. The flat base around its system is made out of aluminium and polycarbonate. The aluminium base is placed on the outside in order to absorb impacts.

The Mallet 1 uses Enduro industry bearings on the outside and a Igus LL-plain bearing. They also use a double seal to ensure your bearing is protected from mud and other debris. If your bearings do become worn through heavy use, you can replace them with a simple service kit and your pedals are as good as new.

good price, effective but flawed

- Leighton 1 May 2017

We all know the reason why Mallet 1 pedals, along with eggbeaters, never became popular in the UK. To save money the manufacturer put a bushing instead of a bearing to support the inside (nearest the crank) side of the pedal. As a result the pedal loosens rapidly on the spindle and eventually slides off the pedal spindle. It doesn't matter that the issue has been resolved on the more expensive pedals -- the reputational damage has been done. I use the cheaper mallets because I know how to replace the bushing, but it is a flaw in an otherwise brilliant and innovative design.
