The flat base around its system is made out of aluminium and polycarbonate. The aluminium base is placed on the outside in order to absorb impacts.

The Mallet 1 uses Enduro industry bearings on the outside and a Igus LL-plain bearing. They also use a double seal to ensure your bearing is protected from mud and other debris. If your bearings do become worn through heavy use, you can replace them with a simple service kit and your pedals are as good as new.
