The open profile ensures that sand, mud and other debris are properly removed. This gives you good braking power in all conditions.
For disc brake rotors, you have 2 different ways of mounting depending on the lock ring. One has an internal fit that you can tighten with a Cassette Removal Tool without a pin. If the inside of the key is open, it can reach far enough over the axle of the wheel. The other version is an external fit that you can tighten with a bottom bracket tool.

Just a good buy
The brake disc is just doing its job, braking. Just take the time to brake it in, then it just works a bit better. Just follow the description in Mantel's blog here on the site. This brake disc does not come with a lock ring, and neither do my new wheels, so I had to order those separately. Scored some nice red ones, also through Mantel.

Beautiful but skewed disc brakes
Of the first pair I ordered, one was so crooked that I sent it back. Even the better of the two was also not perfectly straight, meanwhile a third one arrived with the same problem. After a few rides, the one on the rear wheel is more likely to warp a bit. They look tight but really not recommended. Also because after a dirty/wet ride it is hard to clean between the metal.
