What to consider when buying an electric bike

11 April 2025

Buying an electric bike (e-bike) is an exciting adventure and a major investment. With an impressive choice of models, drive units and features, it is important to know what suits you best. Whether you will use your e-bike mostly for short everyday rides, long tours or commuting, it should meet your every need. In this article, we will explain what to consider when buying an electric bike so you can make the right choice with peace of mind.

1. For what purpose do you intend to use the bike?

The first question to consider is what you will be using the e-bike for. The answer will point you in the direction of the type of bike that is best for you.

  • Commuting: Will you be travelling long distances every day? Choose a model with a powerful mid-mounted drive unit and a long-range battery. You will find them perfect for a fast ride without a sweaty arrival.

  • Recreational use: For relaxing rides in the country comfort is important. E-bikes with a comfortable sitting position, wide tyres and good suspension give you the best possible support.

  • Everyday rides in the city: Compact and lightweight models with a low step-through design are perfect for short distances in city traffic. Choose a bike with pedal assistance with a natural feel and an automatic gear system.

  • Heavy loads or child seats: Consider an electric cargo bike or a long-tail model. These cargo bikes have a strong frame, a powerful drive unit and space for luggage or children.

2. Type of drive unit: mid-, front- or rear-mounted?

The drive unit or motor is an important factor in how you experience the bike. Each type has unique characteristics:

  • Mid-mounted drive unit: These are the most popular types due to their pedal assistance with a natural feel and their good weight distribution. E-bikes with a mid-drive motor, such as Bosch or Shimano Steps systems, are perfect for undulating terrain and longer distances.

  • Rear-wheel drive unit: These motors provide powerful support and a sporty feel. As such, they are perfect for those looking for a bike for recreational use or medium to high intensity rides.

  • Front-wheel drive unit: This is often the most affordable option. This type of motor is less powerful than the above options but suitable for flat roads and shorter distances.

Besides the type of drive unit, also consider its power output. Choose a more powerful motor (e.g. 85 Nm) if you will be climbing hills a lot or transporting heavy loads.

3. What range do you need?

The range refers to the number of kilometres you can ride on a full battery. Besides the battery status, it also depends on factors such as your weight, the terrain and the assistance mode.

  • Short rides (< 50 km): A 300-400 Wh battery usually suffices. Perfect for city use.

  • Medium rides (50-100 km): Choose a 400-600 Wh battery, which suffices for most rides.

  • Long rides (> 100 km): For the avid cyclist or tourist, a battery of 600 Wh or more is recommended. Some models include the option of adding a second battery.

Besides the range, also consider the battery's charging time. High-speed chargers only need a few hours to charge an empty battery.

4. Comfort and type of frame

A comfortable bike is essential for a comfortable ride, especially when it is quite long.

  • Frame type: A low step-through design makes getting on and off your bike easy. Frames for the sports-minded cyclist encourage an aerodynamic sitting position.

  • Saddle and grips: Choose ergonomic models that reduce pressure points and prevent pain, which is particularly important on recreational rides.

  • Suspension: A suspension fork and seatpost absorb shocks on bumpy roads, increasing comfort.

Also consider the frame size and seek advice on this in a shop. A well-fitting bike prevents complaints and increases control.

5. Gears: hub or derailleur?

The gear type contributes to the smoothness of your ride and the amount of maintenance the bike needs.

  • Hub gear system: An ideal system for daily use and little maintenance. These systems can often be used with a closed chaincase, which protects the chain against dirt.

  • Derailleur system: This system gives you a wider choice in gears and is lightweight. It is suitable for hilly terrain and medium to high intensity rides. In electric bikes with a derailleur, gear shifting is faster than with other systems, which is a plus particularly on steep climbs.

6. Brake systems: safety first

An electric bicycle can achieve high speeds, so reliable brakes are essential.

  • Hydraulic disc brakes: Super reliable. Provide high braking power in all weather conditions. Perfect for speed pedelec bikes and for mountainous terrain.

  • Roller brakes: Low maintenance. Suitable for flat terrain.

  • Rim brakes: Less powerful. Lightweight. Easy to replace.

When buying a bike, pay attention to the brake levers, which should be easy to reach and operate.

7. Extra features and accessories

The latest e-bike models come with convenient features for an even better cycling experience:

  • Display: From simple LED indicators to sophisticated touchscreens with navigation.

  • Lights: Opt for battery-powered automatic lights, which are convenient and safe, especially in winter.

  • Luggage carrier: Check that it is strong enough to hold panniers, baskets and/or child seats.

  • GPS tracking device: Increase theft protection. Some bikes come with a pre-installed tracking device.

  • Apps: Some brands, including Bosch, have their own app, allowing you to adjust the settings of your e-bike to your liking.

To make your electric bike even more user-friendly, also consider adding accessories such as mudguards, a chain guard and a kickstand.

8. Make a test ride

A test ride is the best way to find out which electric bike is your best choice. Take time to test several models, keeping the following questions in mind:

  • What size is best for you?

  • How do you like the pedal assistance? Is the drive unit powerful enough?

  • Are the saddle and the grips comfortable?

  • How stable is the bike's frame?

A test ride will give you a good feel of the bike and help you decide whether the range and pedal assist system meet your expectations.

9. Costs and subsidies

An e-bike is a significant investment; please know that there are ways to save money:

  • Subsidies: Some towns and cities offer subsidies on the purchase of an electric bike, usually if it is to be used for commuting.

  • Maintenance: Set aside some money for periodic maintenance jobs such as replacing the chain, tyres or brakes.

  • Bike lease programmes: Look into the possibility of leasing a bike through your employer. There are programmes in place that you can use to buy an e-bike at a reduced cost.

When I was introduced to cycling a few years ago, I was immediately hooked. There are so many different ways to enjoy cycling, from leisurely rides and adventures to tough climbs and races. I do a lot of cycling myself, both road and mountain biking. In addition to commuting to work, I also do touring and training rides. In the future I hope to do a lot of trips abroad!
