Easy installation but with some drops in sync

- Ricardo, 4 August, 2017

Stages power meter is easy to install and easy to calibrate pre-ride. Contains no moving parts so expect it to last as long as the bike itself. It measures only the left side drivetrain, which means only the power you apply with your left leg. It uses math to extrapolate power applied by both legs. It also doubles as a cadence meter thanks to the internal accelerometer. It was simple to sync the stages power meter with a Garmin Fenix 2 and a Garmin Edge 800. Biggest issue resides with drops in communication. I ride with Garmin Edge 800 installed in the out-front mount and when analysing the saved activity, it shows lack of data, both power and cadence, during several seconds, occurring more than 10x in a 1h30 bike ride. I was sort of expecting this issue having done some previous research before purchase. Will try using the garmin edge 800 in a handlebar mount to see if by being closer to the stages power meter it doesn’t lose the signal so many times.

Pros & Cons

Easy installation
No moving parts
Price
Left side measurement only
Signal drops

Excellent product once teething issues sorted!

- Mark, 25 September, 2016

The stages power meter has spent 6 months on the bike in all weathers and once set up has worked really well. I had a couple of issues with dropouts - but a firmware update for the Garmin, the Stages and removal of a metal light mount right next to the left hand side of the Garmin fixed that. Reliable and consistent results and only really needs calibration about once a week. The batteries don't last quite as long as they say but I get about 2000km per battery so not too bad. Make sure that when you change the battery you do it in a dry clean environment, clean the channel the rubber seal slots into and make sure it's all properly in place before putting the battery cover back on - best to do this indoors with the bike on it's side. No issues so far with water ingress and I've ridden in some pretty foul weather.

Pros & Cons

Easy to move between bikes
Light weight
Neat
Quick and easy calibration
ANT+ signal a little weak
Single sided

A must for serious cyclists

- Al, 14 September, 2016

I called myself a serious cyclist for years but while all my peers were racing and training using power I was doing it all on feel and falling behind. The Ultegra Stages power meter has enabled me to gauge my training and performance to an extent I've never known before. I'm in control of my efforts and this means I don't waste energy in any session. A must training aid for the serious competitive cyclist.

Pros & Cons

Control your efforts
No chance of over training
Train to a plan and within personal zones
Don't buy if you are not disciplined
Expensive

Does exactly what it says on the tin

- Jonathan, 22 August, 2016

Very easy to install both on the bike and with my Garmin 520. No issues with calibrating with the stages app on the iphone pre ride. Just make sure the firmware is always up to date on both stages and garmin ti keep the connection running smoothly. Haven't tested it in the wet so can't comment on the waterproofing, but seems better quality when comparing to friends first gen stages.

Pros & Cons

Easy to install
Good value
Makes understanding effort easy
Left sided only

Bought the Stages Ultegra 6800 power meter having thought about it for a while. It's simple to set up, pairs easily with Garmin and ready to go in next to no time. Service from Mantel was excellent arriving on the day they said which made it easier to ensure I was around to sign for delivery. Price was simply the best.

It just works no fuss

- Vincent, 8 August, 2016

Arrived really quickly Mantel is my new favourite bike shop. The Stages was easy to fit and probably most importantly just worked and blended into my bike (unlike my previous power setup). It's early days but cannot see how my opinion will change unless it just stops working altogether.

Great value power meter

- John, 27 June, 2016

I have wanted a power meter for a while as I wanted better feedback of my effort for training purposes. I looked at different versions including crank arm and pedal, but decided the pedal units could be damaged more easily in the event of a crash and also could be more costly for maintenance. The Stages power meter was a doddle to fit and calibrate. Have used the app and my Garmin to calibrate and it's seedless! Can't recommend it enough!

Been considering buying a power meter for 6 months and finally bit the bullet and went for a stages one. Decided I did not need power pedals for left / right issues and can swap the crank easily if needed. Super easy to pair with my garmin and been awesome on rides to watch power. PBs tumbling!

Fantastic product, even better price and service!

- Andrew, 20 June, 2016

Been drooling over the stages power meters since they were launched a few years ago. I can now say I am a proud owner. I happened across Mantel's website and found the stages 6800 for £100 cheaper than any other website. My order was quickly shipped from NL and it the Uk within 24 hours. I would definitely recommend the product to anyone who enjoys cycling as a hobby or more seriously. And I would recommend Mantel to anyone looking for top quality products for seemingly unbelievable prices! Very happy!

Fantastic power meter

- Kevin, 5 May, 2016

Granted I've only had the stages ultegra power meter for 10 days but already I can see its benefits, more structured riding, hard intervals and recovery sections are a lot easier to mange with a power meter, highly recommended and the service and delivery from mantel mean it's pointless looking elsewhere ....

- Gary, 26 April, 2016

After toying with purchasing a power meter for a long time I eventually decided to take the plunge and purchase a stages. It's so easy to install and I can use whatever pedals I like with it and although still a big purchase, in comparison to other meters it's very reasonable. It connected with the stages app on my android phone on the first attempt and I downloaded the latest firmware. I then connected it to my edge 1000 and that's it, done! I've found it useful so far as a pacing tool and time will tell how it improves my training but I can already appreciate the potential. The service from Mantel and DPD was great and after being apprehensive about ordering from outside the UK I wouldn't hesitate to use Mantel again or recommend to others.

Excellent Powermeter

- Kenneth, 23 February, 2016

After considering all the options, I chose a Stages Powermeter based on the following criteria: -- ease of use/ swapping between bikes -- price -- integration with existing equipment. I considered a Powerta wheel (which I had used before), but preferred not to be limited to that wheel, when I already have training and racing wheels that I use. I looked at pedal based systems, but set up was a bit more sensitive plus it would cause me to change my cleats. Aesthetically not quite as pleasing. Not a big deal, but it swayed me against. SRM or other chain set are much more expensive and not easy to change between bikes. Whereas the Stages is fairly easy to interchange between my two bikes, it compatible with existing groupsets and is independent of wheels and pedals. One question in my mind was the left only approach, but having used a wattbike several times, my power is basically 50/50 between left and right, and if it's good enough for team sky it's good enough for me! In use, it's so far been easy to set up, and no issues on the half a dozen rides I've done since. So overall, it did exactly what I was looking for, very pleased so far.

Incredibly easy to install and set up; worked flawlessly, providing lots of fascinating data.

- David, 13 January, 2016

I chose the Stages crank based power meter after much research. I wanted a solution to use on several bikes with a range of different pedals, and Stages is ideal. Incredibly easy to install and set up, I had everything working within 10 minutes of opening the box. This is the first item I haver purchased from Mantel And I can't fault the service. We had a brief conversation on Twitter before I placed my order, and following that the delivery was super fast and communication great. The price was the most competitive I could find too. Overall, excellent on all counts.
