Puncture protection
The Cross King tyre has excellent puncture protection thanks to the ProTection technology. The sidewalls are made of the so-called BlackChili compound, which provides excellent protection against cuts from sharp stones and thorns. In addition, it seals the tyre airtight on a tubeless rim; the latex does the rest! If you have a puncture, the latex fills the hole and you can continue to ride.
The Cross King is an all-rounder. For extreme mud tracks we recommend a Continental Mountain King ProTection tyre.
ProTection is also called the fourth layer. This technology helps to maintain speed and grip due to the BlackChili compound but, above all, offers a great deal of puncture protection. The additional function of the ProTection technology is that the tyre is Tubeless Ready. The Tubeless Ready bead is the perfect base for uncomplicated and easy tyre mounting.
BlackChili compound
A secret recipe for making the compound. The soul of the tyre, as Continental calls it. A mix of basic raw materials where rolling resistance and grip are determined. The tyres with the BlackChili compound rank in Continental's top segment, and are characterised by high grip and low rolling resistance.
UST Tubeless
Inner tubes are superfluous due to the UST Tubeless technology. Continental's tubeless tyres can be fitted on all UST rims. The tyre and rim form an airtight chamber with no inner tube. The annoying 'snakebite' is simply no longer possible. And you can ride at lower tyre pressure, which gives you more comfort and grip; now who wouldn’t want that? In the event of a puncture, the airtight layer on the inside of the tyre can easily be repaired with ordinary repair materials.

Lots of grip with the right tyre pressure, at least if you use the side studs :)
Although I have bought this tyre many times before, this was a warranty case. The tyre I had first received had a huge deviation in the tread. Looked like my rims were completely warped. Mantel had also noticed this and one of the mechanics was kind enough to handle it properly. The next tyre was fine again and I am back in business. Especially at low pressure, they really ride on rails. Do ride with 30 mm (internal) rims.

Top in the rough dry course and reasonable in the wet.
Have this tire in the 29x2.3 protection version on my front wheel with a rim that is 30mm wide internally. Used it for the first time during tough Bart Brentjens Challenge, and the tire immediately gave me a lot of confidence. The clever thing is that the tire rolls well smoothly over obstacles (roots, large boulders) but still gives sufficient lateral stability in gentle cornering. The tire does not deform. Continental has really found the golden mean here and combined with the low weight and acceptable rolling resistance makes this the tire I would choose if I could only choose one. At the back you can mount something lighter such as a raceking (if you ever visit Limburg, choose the protection version). One minus point is the grip now that it gets wetter. Still good and comparable to a Maxxis Rekon, for example. But it excels mainly in the dry and then it does not matter how rough the terrain is.

The better choice for Alpine trails.
Used to ride in the Alps aka Stoneman Taurista. Very good tyre for gravel, rocks and forest trails. Was on the rear wheel.
