The Shimano XTR M9020 chainrings have been given a different teeth design compared to the XTR M9000. These teeth feature an alternating narrow/wide design. This ensures the chain stays on the ring better while also running over it more quietly. The result of those improvements is that the "retention" of the chain is markedly improved, meaning it will last for longer and dropping your chain becomes a thing of the past.
