Our choice for a gravel groupset

Our choice for a gravel groupset

This Campagnolo gravel groupset is the cream of the crop. The 13 rear cogs give you the right gear for almost any terrain. The derailleur is also insensitive to vibrations and the weight of the groupset is nice and low. Gear shifting is cable-assisted, so during long tours you won't end up with a flat battery.

Description

Description

The Campagnolo Ekar 13 speed groupset owes its name and inspiration to the climb up Mont Ekar. On Mont Ekar the asphalt gives way to dirt tracks and paths. The ascent and descent of the climb changes with the seasons, and ride by ride. Just like gravel riding where you alternate unpaved trails with asphalt, the Campagnolo Ekar groupset is derived from the race groupsets, with a slightly more robust finish and increased comfort.

The Campagnolo Ekar groupset with a gear range of 1x13, allows the combination of 4 different single chainrings with 3 different cassette options. 9-36T, 9-42T, and 10-44T and four options for chainrings: 38, 40, 42, and 44 teeth. Thus, with the Ekar groupset Campagnolo provides sprocket combinations for cyclists at every level. No matter the gravel rider's riding style, fitness level or speed, Campagnolo Ekar is ready for any adventure!

Ekar rear derailleur
The design of the Ekar rear derailleur was specifically made for gravel. The 1x13 speed drive has a full range of gears with short, evenly distributed steps based on different pedalling frequencies. The basis of this is the strong, light and efficient rear derailleur. This rear derailleur is equipped with a clutch system, a higher tension on the cage. This prevents the chain from falling off the front sprocket due to shocks or blows to the chain while riding off-road. The combination of over 70 components made from full carbon, carbon reinforced with polyamide and anodised aluminium with stainless steel bolts, exceeds all expectations in any condition.

Campagnolo Ekar cassettes
The Campagnolo Ekar cassette consisting of 13 sprockets makes the idea of a single front chainring much more logical. The gear range has been moved to the rear which makes the front less vulnerable to dirt or vibrations. The new cassettes consist of two parts to combine steel strength with weight saving. The cassette is mounted on the new N3W body, which is also found on the new Shamal Carbon wheelset.

Campagnolo Ekar crankset
The Campagnolo Ekar crankset with single ring is a crucial element in the new gravel groupset. The carbon crankset is lightweight, simple and very secure. The carbon crankset is lightweight, simple and gives great security. 1x is the way to go!

The crankset is made from a steel/aluminium axle with a polyamide carbon spider and UD carbon crank arms. The available crank lengths are: 165 mm, 170 mm, 172.5 mm and 175 mm. The four chainrings that can be fitted are: 38, 40, 42 and 44t. The crank bearings and bottom bracket have also been updated. The crank bearings and bottom bracket have also been upgraded using ProTech technology with additional sealing to keep moisture and dirt out.

Campagnolo Ekar ergopower shifters
Campagnolo Ekar ergopower shifters are based on current Campagnolo technology but adapted for durability and comfort. The shape and modified rubbers provide increased comfort. The position of the brake and shifting levers can be easily adjusted. The optimised thumb switch ensures that the gears are easy to operate from the brackets. Thanks to the Ultra-Shift shifting system, it is possible to shift up to three sprockets and down one sprocket at a time.

Campagnolo Ekar chain
The Campagnolo Ekar chain is an important part of the groupset. The Campagnolo C13 chain with its Nickel-Teflon coating is specifically designed to work perfectly with 13-speed cassettes and sprockets. Despite being Campagnolo's narrowest chain ever, no compromises were made in terms of strength and reliability. The new Ekar chain comes in two options: with a classic chain pin or with a C-LinkTM.

Campagnolo Ekar braking system
The Campagnolo Ekar braking system is based on Campagnolo's hydraulic disc brakes which have been further optimised for gravel and off-road use. For example, it uses a mineral oil that is only suitable for Ekar.

Wonderful product.

Shifts super. Slightly larger difference between gears compared to 2x12, though. But how important do you think that is for your application? And is mechanical: do you necessarily want electronic shifting? (I just don't, as few batteries as possible).
