Pros & Cons

Pros & Cons

  • The Aerothan Allround offers high performance and good puncture resistance for trekking, touring and gravel bikes.
  • Compared to a butyl inner tube, the Aerothan Allround is much more compact and lighter, so it takes up less space in your luggage.
  • Because the Aerothan Allround is made entirely of plastic, including the valve, this inner tube is 100% recyclable.
  • With the Aerothan, you can save up to 180 grams in weight compared to comparable butyl inner tubes.
  • Note: The Aerothan Endurance Race cannot be inflated outside the tyre (only up to 0.3 bar) due to the risk of deformations.
  • Only available with 40mm valve length.

Description

Description

The Schwalbe Aerothan redefines the tube! By using a completely new type of plastic, Schwalbe has brought together the most opposite characteristics of an inner tube: low rolling resistance, low weight and high puncture resistance. The Aerothan combines the puncture resistance of butyl tubes with the rolling resistance and weight of latex tubes.

The Schwalbe Aerothan Allround is the extremely light and reliable tube for a wide range of applications, from everyday use to long and arduous bike rides. With one set of the Aerothan Allround, you gain about 180 grams compared to standard Schwalbe butyl tubes. The gains don't stop there, because the rolling resistance is also much lower thanks to the Aerothan Allround. This, together with an unrivalled puncture resistance for this weight, means you can take on any bike ride with confidence!

Compact size
The Aerothan Allround is not only a lot lighter than comparable butyl tubes, it is also a lot more compact because the material is not as thick as butyl. This makes the Aerothan very handy to carry as a spare tyre in a saddlebag or backpack. If you want to take even less with you, you can also repair the Aerothan on the road. This can be done with Schwalbe Glueless Patches, which you simply stick on the Aerothan without sanding. Please make sure the inner tube is clean.

100% recyclable
An Aerothan inner tube is 100% recyclable. Not only the tube itself is made of thermoplastic polyurethane, but also the valve, from the cap to the valve core. This means that everything can be reused. However, an Aerothan inner tube cannot be reused as an inner tube, but it can be used as an insulation material.

Technology

Thermoplastic polyurethane: Aerothan
Schwalbe, in co-operation with BASF, has completely revised the Aerothan to meet all the specific requirements of an inner tube. For example, this thermoplastic polyurethane now has excellent heat resistance, which means that use with rim brakes is no problem. The elasticity and durability of the material also give this inner tube a good puncture resistance. Thanks to its high resilience and unique tensile strength, the Aerothan will stretch when struck by sharp objects, thereby greatly reducing the chance of penetration. Another advantage of the Aerothan is that this inner tube cannot burst while cycling. This means that you will never lose control of your bicycle because all the air suddenly escapes from your tyre. Because the Aerothan slowly deflates, you can safely come to a stop.

Low rolling resistance

- Arie 8 July 2023

This is my first replacement of my Aerothan inner tube, after about 8,000 km one inner tube went flat in the rear wheel. The front wheel is still just fine and puncture resistant after about 10,000 km. With that, the quality is good. However, the inner tube deflates faster than a butyl inner tube and you therefore have to inflate the tyre more often. Moreover, compared to butyl, the rolling resistance is noticeably lower.

Pros & Cons

Easy to fit
Good puncture resistance
Low rolling resistance
A Schwalbe adhesive set is required for this product
Can 'just' leak at the valve

Fine, light and flexible inner tube, but not too reliable

- Alex 27 December 2022

This is a flexible, super light inner tube. Partly due to the material of the tire and partly because the valve is plastic. If you don't want or can't ride tubeless, these tires come closest to the handling of a tubeless tire. I have used them in a fast gravel bike, and in that they come into their own. When the tires do it, they are super. But the tire has two drawbacks: it is easy to screw in the valve core too far, causing the plastic sleeve to expand and damage it, and in addition I have had several times very small leaks in unexplained places, for example on the inside of a rim with no spoke holes.

Pros & Cons

Removable valve core
Smooth ride
Super light
Plastic valve is fragile
Sometimes inexplicable leak

Comfortable and very nice riding inner tube

- Alexander 10 December 2022

Excellent and light inner tube. Can indeed ride comfortably with lower pressure also on (heavy) gravel roads with luggage. Puncture resistance is difficult to judge but of course this tube can also puncture. Sticking was a bit of a problem before. "Glueless Patches" from Schwalbe didn't always hold up and alternative patches weren't much better either. However, the latest (oval) "Glueless Patches" (model year 2022) from Schwalbe are really a godsend and they do hold up. Patching is now really fast, simple and secure. These patches are hard to come by, though, and certainly not at Mantel as yet. Plastic valves are a fraction thicker, so mini pumps with screw connections do not always fit properly. I always mount a (short) valve extender and then the problem is solved. All in all quite pricey but then you have comfort and speed. Ideal for long (vacation) trips, but take the right stickers with you.
