Pros & Cons
Pros & Cons
- Secure this backrest with clamps to a rear luggage rack that is 14 to 16 cm wide. You don’t need to drill any holes or make any modifications to the bike.
- As the backrest is black, it matches most bikes and luggage racks.
- Your child can relax and lean against the backrest, rather than having to sit upright for the whole ride.
- This is a backrest, not a child seat; it does not have a seatbelt or side protection. Your child must be able to sit upright and hold on by itself.
- The backrest only fits racks between 14 and 16 cm wide. Many racks on e-bikes and transport bikes fall outside this range.
- A seat cushion or footrest is not included and can be ordered separately.

| Brand | Mirage | |
| Attachment | Luggage carrier (standard) |
If you ride your bike with your child on the rear luggage rack, you can install the Mirage rear rack backrest (Dutch: "Kinderrugsteun") to give the child something to lean against. This makes longer trips much more comfortable, and makes your child less likely to slump backwards or to one side. A vinyl cushion is fitted around the horizontal part of the bar so that the child can lean against it comfortably.
The backrest fits rear bike racks between 14 and 16 cm wide and is easy to clip onto them. It is purely a back support; the maximum weight allowed on the rear carrier depends on the carrier itself, not on the backrest.
The Mirage backrest is designed for children who can sit up steadily on their own, on a seat cushion on the luggage rack. If your child is still too young for that, we strongly recommend not using the backrest but, rather, a child seat with a harness.

Clamp mounting around the carrier tubes
The backrest is to be secured to the tubes of your bike's rear carrier using clamps. This means you do not need any special system or mounting points on your bike; as long as the rear rack is the right width, you can fit the backrest onto it.
Compatible with:
- Rear luggage racks 14 to 16 cm wide.
- Rear luggage racks whose tubes are exposed at the point where the backrest is to be fitted, so that the clamps can be fitted around them.
- E-bikes, provided the rear rack is 14 to 16 cm wide and the clamps fit around its tubes.
Not compatible with:
- Rear luggage racks narrower than 14 cm or wider than 16 cm.
- E-bikes whose battery is housed in or on the rear luggage rack and its tubes are not accessible from all sides.
- Click-in systems like MIK or Racktime – the backrest does not click onto an adapter plate but is to be clamped around the rear rack's tubes.
Not sure? Here’s how to check:
Use a tape measure to measure the width of the bike's rear rack at the point where the child sits, from the outside of the left tube to the outside of the right tube. If the width is between 14 and 16 cm, the backrest will fit. Also check whether you can wrap your fingers completely around the tubes. If you can’t, the clamps will not be able to fit around them either.
Included as standard:
- 1 Mirage rear rack backrest ("Kinderrugsteun") in the colour black
- Mounting clamps
Not included, but useful:
- A seat cushion for the rear rack, so your child sits comfortably.
- Footrests to keep the child’s feet away from the spokes.
- Coat guards to prevent coats and scarves from getting caught between the spokes.
The Mirage rear rack backrest is easy to install; no drilling is required. Place the clamps around the tubes of the bike's rear rack and tighten securely so that the backrest cannot tip over or slip.
Once fitted, it is a good idea to give the backrest a firm shake. If it stays completely still, it is ready for use.

- Check the clamps from time to time, especially during the first few weeks. Road vibrations can cause them to loosen slightly.
- Explain to your child that the backrest is meant for leaning against and must not be pulled in any way.
- Pair the backrest with a seat cushion and footrests so that your child sits properly and its feet are away from the spokes.
Will the Mirage backrest fit on my bike's luggage rack?
The Mirage backrest fits on rear luggage racks between 14 and 16 cm wide, and the clamps must be secured around its tubes. Measure your bike's rack from the outside of the left tube to the outside of the right tube. If this width is between 14 and 16 cm, it will fit.
What is the weight limit for the Mirage backrest?
The Mirage backrest does not bear any weight itself; it is simply a support to lean against. How much your child can weigh depends on the maximum load capacity of the bike's rear carrier. This is usually printed on the carrier itself and/or listed in the bike’s user manual.
Can I use the Mirage backrest on an e-bike?
Yes, the Mirage backrest can be used on an e-bike if the rear carrier is 14 to 16 cm wide and you can fit the clamps around the tubes. If the bike's battery is inside or on top of the carrier and you cannot fit the clamps around the tubes, it will not fit.
Does the Mirage backrest come with a seat cushion?
No, the Mirage backrest only comes with the backrest itself and the clamps. You will need to buy a seat cushion and footrests separately. Together, they ensure your child sits comfortably and safely on the back of the bike.
