  • Only marginally heavier than the Dura Ace pedals but at a much friendlier price.
  • The stainless steel pedal axle is maintenance-free.
  • The wide surface area of the pedal ensures optimal power transfer and load distribution.
  • The material of the pedal is a little softer which means it's more easily damaged in the event of an impact.
  • Compared to some of the other pedals, the Ultegra pedals are fairly expensive.

The Ultegra R8000 SPD-SL pedals have once again been further optimised when it comes to power transfer efficiency. In order to make this happen, the pedal body has been lowered to get closer to the axle. This means no power is lost in the adjoining material, creating an optimal balance between low weight and maximum power transfer. The body rotates around a stainless steel axle with double bearings in each pedal. The width ensures optimal stability, while the steel plates improve durability. The spring tension is still adjustable, meaning you can set up how hard it is to (dis)engage the pedal.

Very good product

I had a cheaper group of shimano pedals and replaced it with this Ultegra ones, mostly because I wanted a lighter pedal and more durable. The only thing I noticed was the wider platform that allowed a better support while pedalling. The quality and weight are very impressive and the price was unbeatable.

Pros
  • Light
  • Durable
  • High quality materials

First Class

Fantastic pedals and a first class service from the guys at Mantel. I had spent years cycling road bikes with SPD pedals under the myth they are easier to get your feet out of. This year I was determined to try SL pedals for myself. This is my second set, asi have popped them on both road bikes. The confidence they have given me through the larger contact area is phenomenal. They are beautifully made, extremely light, and pretty okay to get out of.

Pros
  • Beautifully made
  • Very light
  • Hugely confidence inspring
Cons
  • None that come to mind

Great performance pedal for the price

I have used Shimano pedals for many years and these new Ultegra R8000 are the best by far. The pedals are well balanced so a secure clip in first time, every time, no more looking down to see the position of the pedal. Comfortable on long rides

Pros
  • Secure clip in
  • Comfortable
  • power transfer

Smooth, secure, stable: a superb pedal platform

I’ve been been running Crank Brothers Quattro SLs (remember those?) for years now, but finally after I recently developed knee issue, I decided to try a wider and more stable pedal-platform (I.e. less inboard-outboard tilt). All options were on the table for me. I settled on Ultrgra R8000, for weight, price, width, serviceability, axle-length options, float and tension adjustments. It took me one ride to learn how to clip in out and dial in my new cleat position. It took me one other ride to fall in love with the R8000. My knee pains have gone completely, thanks to more forefoot stability. I had concerns about cornering with these, as they’re wider than i’m Used to, but the pedal profiling is excellent, and slightly ramped in cross-section, so I could pedal full-gas round pretty tight corners and happily not strike ground. They are silent, silky smooth, rock solid, with only a loud ‘clack’ in entry and exit. I would buy again, and again. Mantel were also the best price around, and delivered to me in the UK next day. Job done!

Pros
  • Well made
  • Adjustable
  • Serviceable
  • Smooth and silent
  • Light, strong

Manufacturer specifications

• Carbon Body
• Aluminium protective plate

Additional information

The Ultegra R8000 SPD-SL pedals are also available with a 4 mm longer axle. Convenient if you have larger shoes for example, as these might otherwise graze the crank or chain stays. They're also suitable if you have slightly wider hips or when you ride with your knees bent outwards slightly. The extra 4 mm are also comfortable if you're used to a wider Q-factor (distance between both cranks) from mountain biking.
