Buying road bike wheels is not easy, though, because there are several aspects to take into account. The most important one is that you buy the proper wheels for your bike, as we distinguish between road bike wheels for rim brakes and road bike wheels for disc brakes. So, start by checking your type of brakes! Of course, buying new road bike wheels also raises many other questions. The most frequently asked questions are listed below.
Does my cassette fit this road bike wheel?
The cassette, also known as speeds, is placed onto a cassette body. These bodies are available in different fits. We have made a list of these fits for you to find which one you need:
- I have a Shimano cassette with 9, 10, 11 or 12 speeds: Select body type Shimano / SRAM (10 - 11 speed). For 9 and 10 speed cassettes a spacer is placed behind the cassette. Shimano Dura-Ace 12 speed wheels are only compatible with Shimano Dura-Ace 12 speed cassettes.
- I have a SRAM cassette with 11 speeds: Select body type Shimano / SRAM (10 - 11 speed). For 9 and 10 speed cassettes a spacer is placed behind the cassette.
- I have a SRAM cassette with 12 speeds: Select body type SRAM XDR (12 speed). A 12 speed SRAM MTB cassette with XD fit is also compatible but requires a spacer.
- I have a Campagnolo cassette with 9, 10, 11 or 12 speeds: Select body type Campagnolo.
- I have a Campagnolo 13 speed gravel cassette: Select body type Campagnolo N3W. This is also compatible with 11 and 12 speed cassettes with an 11T smallest sprocket.
Can tubeless-ready road bike wheels also be used with tyres with inner tubes?
What are the advantages of carbon road bike wheels?
Carbon road bike wheels are stiffer, lighter and more aerodynamic than aluminium road bike wheels. Because of the increased stiffness, the power you put into the bike is better converted into speed. Because of the lower weight, you need to carry less weight uphill, and can accelerate faster after turns. In addition, the use of carbon allows for the rim to be made into the most aerodynamic shape possible.
Should I buy lightweight or aerodynamic carbon wheels?
The main advantage of aerodynamic road bike wheels is that they reduce drag. The rims in aero wheels are 45 mm or higher and, as such, very suitable for rides in flat areas. But also when riding on hilly terrain you get more benefits from aerodynamic wheels than from lightweight ones. Some disadvantages of high aerodynamic wheels are that they are less agile and slightly heavier. So, if you are going to ride in the high mountains, lower lightweight wheels with a rim height up to 35 mm are recommended. With these you can save a lot of time on climbs of more than 6%! Do you want the best of both worlds? Choose road bike wheels with a rim height between 33 mm and 45 mm. These are relatively lightweight and also offer aerodynamic advantages!
Which tyre width fits the rim of my road bike?
The wider the rim, the more comfort you get. In general, rims with a 17 mm internal rim width can accommodate 23 mm and wider tyres. For a 19 mm internal rim width you need 25 mm or wider tyres and for a 21 mm internal rim width you need 28 mm or wider tyres. If you want to switch to wider tyres, check first whether they will fit your bike. There should always be a few millimetres of clearance between the tyres and the frame.
