This special coating from Shimano uses imbedded fluorine particles to reduce friction and improve system performance. The chain will last longer because friction and noise are reduced and mud is shedded more effectively.

I counted the chain links, shortened it, and it ran smoothly on the bike. It’s running like a dream again. It’s a shame you have to degrease it so thoroughly, though. There really is a nasty layer of grease on it. Even if you don’t use wax, it still attracts dirt.
