Cycling Computers & GPS Selection Guide

Are you looking for an odometer, a GPS bike computer or a bicycle navigation system?

An odometer has a sensor to measure your speed and calculate your total riding distance. However, an odometer has no function to transmit the measured data at the end of the ride (e.g. to a phone or computer). A GPS bike computer retrieves its data via GPS, which means that it does not need a sensor to measure your speed. You can, however, connect a speed sensor and other sensors for more precise measurements. In addition, the route travelled can be read out afterwards, and in many cases you can navigate without maps with a breadcrumb trail. A bicycle navigation system has the same features as a bicycle computer with GPS, plus the function to follow a predetermined route with a map and on-screen instructions.

What types of cycle computers are there?

Do you want to buy a cycle computer? Then it is important to determine what kind of bike computer you want. There are many types of bike computers. If you have just started cycling and mainly want to know how fast you are going, it is best to choose an odometer. If you want a little more information and want to be able to automatically upload your rides to apps like Strava or Komote, you can choose to buy a bike computer with GPS. Do you really want to get the most out of your bike computer and easily navigate anywhere? Then a bike navigation system is for you!

Can I connect my cycle computer with sensors?

If you also want to see your heart rate and other training information on your cycling computer during your ride, you can choose to connect your sensors with your cycling navigation or cycling computer with GPS. Power meters, heart rate monitors or cadence sensors are products that are often bought together with a cycling computer. These products allow you to get even more out of your cycling computer and your training sessions. As a cyclist, you can never have enough data!

What else do you need to consider when buying a cycle computer?

What you have to consider when buying a cycle computer is different for everyone, of course. It just depends on what you are looking for. There are, however, a number of important points to bear in mind. When looking for a bike computer, consider its battery life, screen size, Strava Live Segments, touchscreen, and altitude measurement.
