Pros & Cons
Pros & Cons
- This groupset is 100% complete and includes absolutely everything you need!
- High shifting speed and precision, even when you are stepping down on the pedals.
- Semi-wireless: there's only a cable connection between the battery, front and rear derailleurs. This makes mounting easier and cable breakage highly unlikely.
- Braking power with superb modulation and smooth engagement. For brake bleeding, the caliper must not be unscrewed from the frame. How convenient is that!
- The derailleurs only need to be finetuned once thanks to Di2 electronic shifting. After that, it's done for the rest of your road bike's life.
- Ultegra R8100 Di2 Disc is not the lightest groupset; it is heavier than groups from a higher segment.

The Shimano Ultegra 8100 Di2 groupset is a semi-wireless electronic gear shifting groupset with disc brakes. It ranks among the best in terms of braking and shifting performance to give you great confidence as well as security for the long run. This is because the best and most sophisticated technologies have been incorporated into this groupset. Although Shimano has saved somewhat on the materials used for the components, this groupset offers the same improvements in terms of gear shifting speed on the derailleurs as Shimano's most professional groups.
In principle, this electronic setup only needs to be finetuned once for the rest of the bike's lifespan. Maintenance of the braking system has also been simplified, and the system is less susceptible to brake disc rubbing or annoying noises during use.
Shifters
The ergonomics of the Shimano Ultegra 8100 shifters have been optimised for a pleasant hold. Thus, you can easily position your fingers and comfortably change riding positions. The shifters use 2 button-cell batteries for a reliable connection between the front and rear derailleurs. Battery life is about 1.5 years.
Drivetrain
Gear shifting speed of the front and rear derailleurs has been improved significantly - it is 58% and 45% faster than in previous Shimano Di2 derailleurs. The derailleurs have also been further optimised, especially to shift better under load. You will notice this immediately when climbing in a standing position or sprinting.
The groupset can easily be charged via the Shimano Ultegra 8100 rear derailleur using the same charging cable as the one used for new Shimano power meters. The Junction Box, which used to be installed in the frame or handlebars for finetuning, is no longer necessary. Its technology, with all of its adjustment options, has been integrated into the rear derailleur.
Disc brakes
The disc brakes have also been upgraded. The Ultegra brake caliper consists of two parts and has been CNC machined. An extra 10% of space has been created between the brake pads and brake discs so that the brakes are unlikely, or even unable, to seize up when you're not braking. Few things are more annoying than rubbing disc brakes during a climb or sprint! Finally, braking power and modulation have also been noticeably improved.

Semi-wireless
This Shimano Ultegra R8100 Di2 Disc group only has a cable connection between the battery, front and rear derailleurs. Shifting performance has been taken to an even higher level. Not only has the shifting speed increased, you can now also shift smoothly while applying force to the pedals. Also, a junction box is no longer needed because you can adjust the settings of the groupset and charge it via the rear derailleur. On a full charge you can cycle for about 1000 kilometres. The wireless shifters use two button cell batteries that will last about 1.5 years before needing to be replaced.
Shimano Di2 app
For all settings such as the use of shift buttons, shifting mode or shifting speed, you can use the Shimano Di2 app. The function of the shift buttons is individually adjustable. It is still possible to use the synchronised shift or semi-synchronized shift function, which makes the front derailleur shift along automatically for an ideal chainline.
Servowave
The brakes use Shimano's Servo Wave Action, a technology that ensures that the speed at which the pistons move towards the disc decreases as they get closer to it. This preserves the bite that Shimano brakes are renowned for, whilst significantly improving brake modulation.
Cassette
Hyperglide+ cassettes are available in different ratios. These ratios take into account the sweet spot between the 6th, 7th and 8th sprockets. 12 speed makes it possible to maintain the sprockets that ride most comfortably at average speeds despite large ratio differences. The cassettes come with the well-known HG mounting pattern, which is also backwards compatible with all Shimano HG 11-speed freehub bodies.
Brake maintenance
Maintenance of the brakes has been simplified. Thanks to a separate bleeding port and twist valve, it is now possible to bleed the brakes without removing the caliper from the frame. The new funnel and spacer for bleeding the caliper help optimise the bleeding process.
