What makes a great brake? The key is the modulation!

- Dominic 26 February 2018

I needed a replacement brake for a trip to Malaga, so Mantel did their thing and delivered it promptly and at a great price. I bought a SRAM Guide RS for the rear. I've used the same brakes for the last 3 years and they are my preferred brake. Shimano may be cheaper but the modulation of the SRAM is much more accessable. The instant grab of Shimano brakes isn't there and that's why some people like the Shimano brakes, but for me it needs to be more subtle than that. You can get full power from the guides when you need it, but in the loose conditions of the Spanish mountains you don't always want to lock up the brakes... The brake did heat up on the long descents and the bite point changed a little as a consequence but the modulation and power of the brake never faltered.

Pros & Cons

Best modulation on the market
Great price
They do heat up on long descents
