What makes this balaclava special is the stretchy face opening that gives you the choice of pulling the fabric all the way up over your nose, only over your mouth, or even under your chin, depending on how cold it is and how much coverage you need.
Important note on temperature range: This balaclava is designed for cold to very cold winter rides, and temperatures down to around -10°C, comparable to other Castelli accessories featuring the same Polartec AirCore and Warmer materials.
Polartec AirCore fabric on the front
This material provides the protection you need in the area most exposed to the wind while cycling.
"Warmer" fleece fabric
This soft fabric wicks away moisture, ensuring your face doesn’t stay damp despite the warmth retained by the balaclava.
Stretchy face opening
This opening is customisable to your preference and the conditions of your ride. You can pull the fabric over your nose for maximum protection, over your mouth for medium coverage, or under your chin if you prefer to keep your face uncovered.
Why is an adjustable opening better than a fixed one?
With a balaclava that has a fixed face opening, you have to decide in advance how much coverage you want, and that is how it is going to be for the entire ride. But conditions often change during a ride – on a fast descent, for example, you may want to cover your nose and mouth against the wind, while on a climb you mayd prefer a bit more airflow. The stretchy opening on this balaclava lets you make that adjustment yourself, without having to take the balaclava off, simply by sliding the fabric over or under your face.
- Cold to very cold winter rides where you want to protect your whole face and neck;
- Use under a cycling helmet thanks to its comfortable fit.
- Mild weather, when a thinner neck warmer or hat will be more comfortable.
- Wash the balaclava at a maximum of 30°C for best care of the Polartec AirCore fabric and the "Warmer" fleece.
- Leave to air dry; the tumble dryer will damage both materials.
- Adjust the face opening during your ride as conditions change – wear the balaclava over your nose in strong winds, and under your chin if you want more air.
