The Shimano Ultegra R8000 groupset is the successor to the highly popular Shimano Ultegra 6800 series. The R8000 uses virtually all of the technologies first seen with the Dura Ace R9100 groupset. Instantly recognisable features such as the asymmetric crank arm, the rear derailleur with Shadow technology, and the compact front derailleur look like a carbon-copy. What makes the Ultegra R8000 drivetrain different to Dura Ace is predominantly colour, weight, and price. The best shifting performance and stopping power provided by the Shimano Dura Ace R9100 groupset can now be experienced with the new Shimano Ultegra R8000 as well!
Shifters
The new Ultegra R8000 provides noticeably improved stopping power because of the ergonomic design of the shifters paired to the wider brake calipers. Working in tandem with the optimised front- and rear derailleur, you’ll be shifting through gears even more fluently and faster than with the 6800 shifters.
Crankset
The asymmetric Shimano Ultegra R8000 crankset takes its design from the Dura Ace R9100. This shape ensures optimal power transfer and allows for a more efficient pedalling motion. The Hollowtech technology has been used to create this crankset which enables Shimano to offer the best balance between weight and stiffness.
Front derailleur
The technology used for the Shimano R8000 front derailleur has resulted in a considerably more compact appearance. This change has also made adjustability and shifting speeds considerably more efficient. Particularly the former had a lot of room for improvement. An adjuster has been built into the derailleur, meaning it takes a lot less effort to set up the proper cable tension for your front derailleur.
Rear derailleur
The Shimano Ultegra R8000 Shadow rear derailleur has a narrower and more aligned position directly under the cassette. This provides both an aerodynamic advantage as well as a more protected location in the event of a crash. It’s also possible to use a direct mount attachment which makes swapping your rear wheel even easier. 2 technologies which have been used in mountain bike rear derailleurs for several years now, and something Shimano has decided to carry over to their road bike groupsets as well.
Brakes
The Shimano Ultegra R8000 brake calipers have been given a wider opening with more clearance for tyres up to 30 mm. The cable tensioner has also been given a more aerodynamic design. The lever-function has also been further improved to apply more stopping power to wider rims.
