Reviews over the
Garmin Edge 840

Compact and fast navigation
840 is compact, settings via phone are handy. In the beginning it takes some getting used to how everything works but after a while you get used to it.

Expensive, time-consuming to set everything up, but then lots of fun!
Much more convenient than navigating with a phone + power bank, and much nicer than looking at my (garmin) watch for relevant information during a ride. Setting everything up properly does take a lot of time, especially the fine tuning of your data fields, but when you have got past this, it really is a wonderful device. I am also very happy with the touchscreen. While biking, it is so handy to swipe a different screen. In the rain, it also worked perfectly.

Good as to be expected from a Garmin but not necessarily a marked improvement over the 830
Purchased this Garmin after more than 5 years with the Garmin 830. Am satisfied but the navigation on the map seems to lag slightly behind the real location, causing me to miss a turn a few times. Also the start screen (where you can switch between the different profiles) is a step backwards in my opinion.

Far too complex or wrong choice made.
Far too difficult to use solely as a GPS.

Recommended for road bikes
Coming from the Sigma ROX 12.0, there was a learning curve. But after some playing around at home and the first ride, I now know how to find everything. Convenient, fast and stable pairing with the app which is also very comprehensive. Long battery life.

Top bike computer
Fine bike computer, not too big, not too small. Many possibilities

Ideal bike computer
Nice size. Not as big as an Edge 1040 and not as small as a 540. After several years of cycling without a bike computer, this is a relief. Display is clear. A phone display is much sharper but this screen suffices as a bike computer. The integration with Garmin Connect is very nice. I used to register a ride with my Garmin watch but this is much more convenient. All in all, a fine device.

Top device for everyday use
After an 820 and 830, now switched to 840. Very satisfied with ease of use of the garmin devices. For me, the 800 series is the ideal version. Small enough for everyday use (compared to 1000 series) but big enough for navigation (compared to 500 series). Ideal all-rounder. Fully adjustable to your own liking but this requires some trial and error. Checking which data should be visible when and how. Once set, it is super

Not user-friendly for average users
Been using a Polar Vantage watch for years while cycling (handlebar mount) but it cannot navigate and taking it off the handlebars every time is inconvenient. Because of the positive reviews and brand awareness, I chose this Garmin. It works well with my Polar heart rate, cadence and speed sensors via Bluetooth. However, the device does not excel in ease of use. I removed almost all screens, disabled most functions because of the beeping on the road. When you are not careful you get distracted. The apps and website are also overkill for the average user. The device is dedicated for cycling (professional) but the Connect app and website even covers diving?!?!? Creating a route you really have to get handy with because it's not intuitive. You do this best via a computer. Switching the pairing between phone, iPad or your PC is not convenient either. The device itself works well in the end and no complaints about that, but perhaps for my kind of use a Wahoo would be better

Just does everything
This device does it all and is very convenient to use because of its touchscreen.

Beautiful device, poor manual.
Switched from an 820 to this 840. The features are vast and it takes some adjusting to the new screen layout. Once set up, the device works like a piece of cake and the data you can display while cycling is very practical. But....when is Garmin going to learn to produce a good and precise manual ? Automatically connecting to Garmin Connect as described didn't work until I (1) realised that you have to manually pair the device before you can get it to connect automatically and (2) performed a software update on the device.

THE bike computer/navigation to last for years.
I was in huge doubt about buying another old 530 but ended up going for the 840. Very glad I made the extra investment for the touch screen. A real must in my eyes. Climbpro 2.0 is also a plus compared to the older versions. If you just follow someone without loading a route you can still see the necessary on the device. Only downside at the moment is that the connection to my watch for heart rate is permanently off and on. Currently no idea why. It is a Forerunner 245, so also from Garmin. Could also be due to watch itself, still to be investigated. In summary, a bit on the expensive side but touchscreen é Climbpro 2.0 do make it worthwhile.

The must-have bike GPS
I've just upgraded from the 820 to the 840. This GPS is really complete and very easy to use. The configuration transfer between the 820 and the 840 is really brilliant, as there's no need to go through the whole process of setting up the new GPS again. I'm also very pleased with its battery life (over 20 hours). The Climbpro function is very useful. It allows you to see the profile of a climb and thus manage your effort more effectively. I've still got a few things to test out, like the training sessions, but I'm already very, very pleased with it.

Pricey, but worth it.
Quite an improvement over the Edge 530 I had before. 1. Touchscreen I always missed with the 530; in the age of smartphones and tablets, it just works much more intuitively and quickly. 2. The updated navigation works much nicer; if you drive wrong once (diversions, ...), you now get the option to pause the navigation, and as soon as you are back on the old route, the navigation continues automatically. My Edge 530 used to nag/beep/... for minutes in such a situation. As a bonus, route calculation is also much faster. 3. Adjust route during ride is now possible; directly from your smartphone (I usually use Komoot) you can now push new routes to your Garmin, without having to stop your activity. For me, those are the main improvements. Even discounted, it's still a pricey thing though; for the same money you can buy a very decent smartphone.

Ideally compact and user-friendly cycle computer
I was looking for an update for my old edge 820. The edge 840 is a touch bigger, which gives a clearer picture while cycling. But screen is not too big like the garmin 1040.

Great garmin edge that definitely I definitely recommend!
Used right away on the first day after arriving. Loaded the route and got on the bike. Very easy to use and nice size for cycling.

Top product as we have come to expect from Garmin
So far a very nice device. Paired it with my wahoo kickr and it actually works surprisingly well. I must also admit that the touchscreen feels good and natural. The battery life is also very good and the options that are endless at the moment. Very nice device

Good device but far from perfect
Good GPS with a multitude of functions (probably too many for the average cyclist). The battery life is excellent, as is the cartography, with all the fifrelins of trails well mapped out. On the other hand, it is not without its faults. In undergrowth, there's a nasty reflection on the screen, which is very disturbing in navigation mode. Again in navigation mode, the useful screen area is (very) small, and the same applies when you receive messages (traffic, text messages, etc.). If you have poor eyesight, it's best to go for a larger model. Once you're on the bike, the connection with your smartphone is catastrophic! It rarely works. Climbpro, while a nice feature, takes too much precedence over navigation. For example, you arrive at a Y junction on a hill and you don't know which way to go. And in the woods, where there are lots of paths, it's even worse. So navigating in the woods with the reflection + climbpro can quickly become very irritating. What's more, climbpro is very approximate. Often, the real end is 2-300 metres after the end of climbpro. In terms of bugs, on a route of (only) 126 km, I got a "memory insufficient" message and then the device shut down. I've also had contradictory messages: "turn back when I'm on the track". As for the usefulness of touch compared to the edge 540, I'd say yes, useful. Not that we use it a lot, because we know how to set more or less everything with our smartphone, but using the buttons is not really pleasant. The thermometer overestimates by at least 2-3 degrees, even in the shade, and the percentage of slopes is sometimes questionable. In short, for a Garmin-branded device, a state-of-the-art model at €450, I find that there are a lot of 'faults', hence the 3 stars only.

Perfect.
Fast delivery, nice functional device with lots of functions. More than you could think of on your own. The downside is that it does take some time to discover it all. The advantage is that you can quickly get started with the basic functions.

Super bike computer
The Garmin Edge 840 is an excellent cycling computer with advanced features. The device performs excellently: route calculation is fast and even if you deviate from the route, the Garmin smoothly plans a new course to your original path instead of simply reversing. Battery life is impressive and the screen remains easy to read even in bright sunlight. The bright and responsive touchscreen makes navigation easy, while the accurate GPS and comprehensive map options are perfect for both road and off-road rides. The screen size is perfect in my opinion. The Garmin has an elaborate interface which takes some getting used to at first. Although the price is on the higher side, its excellent performance and reliability justify the investment.

Pricey but good product.
It takes some getting used to when using it and a lot of setting up, but once that process is over, it sits quickly on the bike and works as you would expect.

Wonderful bike computer.
Already made a few rounds with the Garmin Edge 840. You can see from everything that this is an important product for Garmin. Garmin has listened carefully to their customers and used all their experiences for this bike computer. The Garmin Edge 840 has a compact size, all kinds of buttons and a clear touchscreen. Installation is done within a few minutes, with the Garmin connect app connecting the bike computer to the internet. If you already have a Garmin watch, this is a piece of cake as it uses the same data. Also handy is to connect the Di2 gears and all kinds of sensors to the bike computer. During the ride, the bike computer is easy to operate, even with gloves. After the ride, you press the bottom button and the bike computer saves the data to the internet via wifi or mobile. Unfortunately, the bike computer does not have an e-sim, so it is still wise to bring the mobile along with the ride. The bike computer has a lot of possibilities, which is a bit far to discuss here, but on YouTube there are numerous videos about it. The price is one thing though, it is quite steep. The Garmin Edge 840 really adds something to your cycling experience, I'm going to do another round soon myself.

Very satisfied and Garmin 840 meets expectations.
The usage is similar to the other Garmin. The touch screen is an advantage. With a downloaded manual, the Garmin 840 is easy to set up. Not yet able to try out all the functionalities in the first few weeks.
