Inner Tubes for Road Bikes Selection Guide

Of which material do you want your inner tube to be made?

Inner tubes are available in different types of rubber. The most commonly used rubber is butyl. Butyl holds air well and provides good puncture resistance, but is not the lightest or fastest material. Besides butyl, there is also latex. Latex is more lightweight and provides lower rolling resistance and more comfort. However, this material is more expensive and holds air less well, which means you will have to inflate your tyres more often. Latex is most efficient in top-class road bike tyres. Finally, there are manufacturers who have developed innovative materials for inner tubes. As these bring the properties of butyl and latex together, they are a happy medium between these two materials.
