Cycle computers: The Garmin Edge 1040 and the Garmin Edge 1040 Solar [REVIEW]

8 June 2022

In 2022 Garmin launched the new Garmin Edge 1040 and Garmin Edge 1040 Solar cycle computers. Two Garmins with many awesome new features. In this blog we will take a closer look at these new features as well as the improved old ones.

What’s in the box of the Garmin Edge 1040 (Solar)?

Every new Garmin cycle computer comes with an out-front mount, a handlebar mount and all the rubber bits and straps needed to mount the device securely and scratch-free. You will also find a USB-C charging cable and a user manual in the box.

Garmin Edge Solar

In addition to the normal out-front mount, the Edge 1040 Solar also comes with a Garmin Edge mountain bike handlebar mount and a silicone case that serves to protect your Garmin in case of a fall or other impact. Also in the box is a strap to secure your Garmin to your bike’s handlebars or stem so you cannot lose it. Those opting for the Garmin Edge 1040 Performance Bundle will also receive a heartrate monitor, a speed sensor and a cadence sensor. Like the Edge 1030 Plus, the Edge 1040 has a 32 GB internal memory, and the Solar has an impressive 64 GB internal memory, allowing you to save even more rides, routes and workouts.

The design of the Garmin Edge 1040 (Solar)

In terms of the appearance of the all new Garmin Edge models we immediately notice the computer's surrounding edge. Whereas it is light grey in the Edge 1040, it is dark grey in the Edge 1040 Solar. On the Solar we see a border with a solar panel above and below the screen, but the size of the screen is the same 3.5 inches as that of the regular Edge 1040.

In addition, in both models the panel at the back that is used to attach the computer to the mount is now made of aluminium. In the 1030 and other previous models it is/was plastic. The back panel surrounding the attachment knob also differs from previous models; where these had a smooth back, the back of both the 1040 and the 1040 Solar has a ribbed structure. Such small changes make for a sleek and fresh design.

Navigate with the Worldwide Garmin Cycle Map

Of course, the Edge 1040 and 1040 Solar include navigation functions. Both models use a new kind of map, the Worldwide Garmin Cycle Map, rather than the Garmin Cycle Map used in previous models. The map you see on the 3.5 inch screen has been improved and navigates even better now wherever you are, on the road, on gravel or in the forest. The new models also use the new multi-band satellite technology to ensure the best GPS reception even in densely wooded or built-up urban areas. This contributes to improvements in the rerouting function; your Garmin will now present an alternative route even faster if you go the wrong way.

Continue for longer with the improved battery

The improved battery in the 1040 allows you to cycle up to 35 hours in normal mode and 70 hours in battery saver mode, so you can go out for a ride more often without having to recharge. With the 1040 Solar, the battery lasts an impressive 45 hours in normal mode and 100 hours in battery saver mode. So, you won't find yourself with a dead computer on the road anytime soon. But if this is still not enough for you, why not take a look at the Garmin Charge™ Power Pack? This power bank lets you charge your Garmin as you ride and lets you continue for an additional 24 hours, which is perfect for long trips such as a bikepacking or cycling holiday!

Use solar power to charge the Garmin Edge 1040 Solar

Looking at the Garmin Edge 1040 Solar, you will notice that there is a black edge above and below the 3.5 inch Power Glass™ screen, a part of which is a slightly lighter shade - this is the solar panel. When exposed to enough sunpower, this panel can extend the Edge 1040 Solar's battery life. There is also a function that lets you see how much time it has added via solar charging. Garmin itself claims that the computer will last up to 42 minutes longer for each hour of cycling in the sun. Of course, you can also charge the computer using a USB-C cable.

Preload your activity profile

Those used to Garmin's menu structure will be able to find all the familiar functions as well as the added new ones quite easily despite the all new software. Pairing with sensors is fast and straightforward, which it has always been with Garmin. Whether you go cycling on your road bike, gravel bike, mountain bike or indoors, you can create a separate profile for each type of ride. For each profile and activity, you can set which data fields you want to see. You’ll love not having to select the sensors per profile - your Garmin detects which sensors are on and automatically connects with them, that is, if you have added them to your Garmin cycle computer before.

New and improved functions of the Garmin Edge 1040

The new Garmins also collect more data. For instance, there is the Power Guide that helps you train with a focus on power. And there is the Real-Time Stamina Insight function that allows you to see how long you should be able to continue with a certain effort. Please note that you need a power meter to be able to use these functions. Besides new features, the Garmin Edge 1040 computers also include existing features that have been improved. One of these is Training Plans, which helps you do your pre-loaded workout even better. Your computer indicates exactly when you are cycling in the right zone and when your interval starts and ends.
