CycleOps Turbo Trainers 2017 - 2018 - What CycleOps Trainer best suits Your needs? [Buyer's Guide]

20 October 2017

CycleOps Turbo Trainers have been the most popular cycle trainers in the US for years. Not entirely without reason either. The quality is spot-on and the user-friendliness is perhaps even higher than you’ve come to expect from established names such as Tacx and Wahoo. Like these other brands of turbo trainers, CycleOps too offer direct drive trainers and classic roller trainers. Naturally, they work with Zwift as well.

CycleOps turbo trainers are available in the same versions as the more well-known brands. Something that sets them apart from other rear wheel trainers is the way you set-up your trainer.

The adjustable legs ensure the CycleOps Turbo Trainers are stable.

We’re used to having to check the pressure of your rear wheel onto the roller before every ride on the turbo trainer. Is that pressure too high or low? Then chances are the trainer won’t work optimally and your tyre might lose traction.

You then have to manually adjust the pressure step-by-step until you get it right. Something which can be quite a fuss when you just want to get a quick training session in.

The yellow Clutch Dial makes calibrating the trainer extremely easy.

They’ve found the ideal solution back at CycleOps for this: the striking yellow clutch dial. This acts much like a torque wrench: once the optimal pressure has been reached it simply won’t go any tighter and the dial just clicks.

All you have to do then is make sure your rear tyre is inflated to the correct tyre pressure. The Clutch Dial on the CycleOps turbo trainer does the rest.

CycleOps turbo trainers come with a lifetime warranty

Another unique plus to the CycleOps trainers is that you receive a lifetime warranty on the frame and moving parts. All electronics come with a 2 year warranty.

That warranty applies to all CycleOps turbo trainers, so there’s no difference between the direct drive trainers or basic turbo trainers.

CycleOps Riser Block

The Riser Block allows you to simulate a gradient while simultaneously ensuring your front wheel is stable!

A great accessory for the turbo trainers by CycleOps is their very own Riser Block. The front wheel support fixates your front wheel so you feel stable on the bike when it’s fitted to the turbo.

The unique thing about the Riser Block is that you can set your front wheel to three different heights. You can choose between a 5.3, 6.8, or 7.9 cm rise.

Want to simulate an even steeper gradient? Simply stack two CycleOps Riser Blocks on top of each other!

CycleOps Smart Turbo Trainers

The Smart turbo trainers by CycleOps work with all the well-known training software tools such as TrainerRoad, Kinomap, Rouvy, Sufferfest, and -naturally- Zwift.

You can also use your CycleOps trainer as a stand-alone trainer. This means you can park it in your garage next to your, ehm, fighter jet.

You can connect the CycleOps Smart Trainers to your tablet or smartphone using Bluetooth.

Want to connect with your computer? Not a problem thanks to the built in ANT+ FE-C (Fitness Equipment Control) protocol. This even allows you to operate the trainer via a modern cycle computer such as the Wahoo ELEMNT (Bolt) or the Garmin Edge 1030 or Garmin Edge 820.

CycleOps basic turbo trainer

The CycleOps basic turbo trainers are easy to use with their intuitive design and yellow CycleOps Clutch Dial for fast calibration of the trainer.

Basic trainers can’t pair with your phone, tablet, or PC. You can use a speed sensor and power meter to turn your CycleOps Turbo Trainer into a Smart device.

Train indoors this winter with CycleOps

Want to keep cycling indoors this winter, or are you looking for a good trainer for your warming up or cooling down? Then an CycleOps turbo trainer is definitely worth considering.

You might even be able to suffer more indoors than outdoors!

You can find me on a bicycle almost every day. I commute each day from my house to work and back. Often on my road bike, and during the winter on an old crosser. And if that isn't enough, you can find me on my bike during most weekends too. On my trusty road bike or my mountainbike. And if you can't find me outdoors riding my bike, odds are I might be riding on Zwift
