Pros & Cons
- This derailleur works on all mechanical 11-speed Shimano shifters.
- The long cage derailleur can handle a cassette of up to 34 teeth. Perfect for in the mountains!
- The shifting performance of this derailleur is almost as good as Ultegra.
- This derailleur is closer to the cassette and is therefore better protected if you fall.
- The derailleur wheels are less flexible and durable than the derailleur wheels of an Ultegra R8000 or Dura-Ace R9100 derailleur.
- This derailleur can flap more than Shimano 11-speed derailleurs from a higher price segment, because the spring tension is lower.

Description
Description
The Shimano 105 R7000 rear derailleur (11-speed) is part of the new Shimano 105 R7000 group. With the rear derailleur, techniques have been adopted from the more expensive groups. The low profile shadow design is also used with the R7000 rear derailleur. The derailleur protrudes less because of this geometry. This makes the derailleur less vulnerable when cycling or when falling. In addition, this improves shifting performance.
Handy for in the mountains!
If you go to the mountains and you have an 11-speed Shimano shift group, you can always use the Shimano 105 R7000 11-speed Long Cage in combination with your current shifters. with this derailleur you can insert an 11/32 or an 11/34 cassette, so that you can come up that alpine col much easier!
Pay attention!
Turning the cable bolt is different from what you are used to from previous Shimano derailleurs. This bolt has a lock function, which means that the cable tension cannot change. To release this lock, you must first pull the bolt upwards before you can turn it.
• Long cage (GS): 11/28, 11/30, 11/32, 11/34
Short cage:
• Min.: 11-25T
• Max.: 11-30T
• Max. difference front: 16T
• Total capacity: 35 teeth
Long cage:
• Min.: 11-28T
• Max.: 11-34T
• Max. difference front: 16T
• Total capacity: 39 teeth
To loosen and tighten the bolt with which the gear cable is attached to the derailleur, you need a 5 mm Allen key. You can find these here.
Removing the chain.
Before you can remove the derailleur, you will also have to remove the chain. How to do this, you can read here. You need a chain tool for that. We have these here. Make sure you buy one of the right brand and the right number of speed.
Use assembly grease for mounting.
If you are going to mount the new rear derailleur, it is best to apply some mounting paste to the threads of the derailleur hanger. You can buy this aseembly grease here.
Assembling jockey wheels.
To mount jockey wheels you need an Allen key of 2.5mm or 3mm. A handy Allen key can be found here:
A problem that crops up often is a skew derailleur hanger. It can happen if the derailleur bumps hard into something, which may occur, for example, if you and your bike fall during cycling. Luckily, it can be fixed! Use a derailleur hanger alignment tool, and read more here (Dutch only).
Clean the jockey wheels well too!
Just like the chain, the jockey wheels on a derailleur get super dirty. As a result the shifting is not as good and it does the lifespan of your derailleur no good. For that reason, it's a good idea to clean the jockey wheels at the same time when you clean and lube your chain. Do this by running a cloth along the jockey wheel while gently turning the chain. Of course it gets to a point where the jockey wheels are worn out. In this blog post you can find out more about when jockey wheels should be replaced and what you need.

Geweldige derailleur maar bij valpartij dure grap
- Kevin 16 June 2022

This was fitted to a new bike build. All good, works just as you'd want it to :) I can't speak to longevity yet, I have high expectations!
