Road & MTB Cassettes - From 9 to 13 speed

A lot of questions may come up when you're looking to buy and replace your cassette. Below are the most frequently asked questions and their answers, to help you purchase the right cassette without any problems.

Should the speed of the cassette be the same as the rest of my groupset?

Yes, it should. If you have an 11 speed chain, derailleurs, shifters, front sprockets etc., the cassette must also be 11 speed. For 10 speed, the cassette must also be 10 speed, and so on.

I want climbing gears on my road bike. Which cassette should I buy?

If you want to climb, it is best to buy a cassette with a large number of teeth in the lightest gear. The other light gears are also closer together in terms of number of teeth on these cassettes. This makes it easy to pedal with the ideal cadence while climbing. The largest cassette you can mount on your bike depends on your front chainrings and your derailleur. Read more about this in this blog.

I have a different brand of groupset from this brand of cassette, what now?

Up to 11 speed, Shimano and SRAM are interchangeable. This means that, for example, a 10 speed cassette from SRAM can be used in combination with a 10 speed chain from Shimano and vice versa. For Campagnolo, none of the cassettes can be replaced by SRAM or Shimano cassettes. Despite the fact that it's possible to get it to work in some cases, we do not recommend mixing different brands. Most brands have adjusted the scaling of the chain and chainrings to match, which means that you will get the best shifting performance if you combine  parts from the same brand.

Is it possible to use a road bike cassette on a mountain bike?

In most cases it is not possible to mount a road bike cassette on an MTB hub. If you do want a heavier gear on your mountain bike, consider a larger MTB front chainring. You can find those here.
