Worldtour Teamwear 2017 - See what the Pros are Wearing
It’s always good fun to see what the pack’s going to wear coming season. There are some new teams and almost every team - except the French teams - have a new kit. Like every year on January 1st, many new contracts have been signed, so it is about time to take a look at the new kits.
Team wear design is increasingly important for riders. In the past team kits were a hodgepodge of sponsor colours, which resulted in the ugliest kits you can imagine. Now, though, most teams have their own designers.
Clean looks for the pros
Nowadays it’s less colours so looks clean and incredibly stylish. Team Sky have been one of the first to start this new trend, so you can see the others following their lead. One of the biggest changes for 2017 is Team SKY’s switch from clothing brand Rapha to Castelli.
So Castelli caught a big one there. BMC also made a move: they changed from Pearl Izumi to Assos. This is one of the first team that Assos actually sponsored a team.
Helmets
In the helmet area not much has changed. Most teams stayed true to their brands. Only thing that has caught our attention is that Bell doesn’t sponsor any Worldtour team anymore.
Their spot was taken over by Lazer, who strikingly have started sponsoring multiple teams.
Cycling shoes
Shoes are always a difficult and sensitive topic. The pro teams try to get contracts, but it’s always hard to do with shoes.
However more and more teams got their riders to wear the same brand, likeShimano or Sidi shoes. Also because these two make custom made shoes.
Glasses
This is the part where it changes the most. Most of the teams wear the same brand, but every rider wants to have his own colour. Oakley has been popular for years in the pack.
Some say that you have to wear white glasses with white shoes. From a reliable source I learned that Team Sunweb is strict when it comes this: they want all their riders to wear the same glasses. A rider can only wear a different colour if he also wears the leader’s jersey.
Riders can often choose from 2 models to see which one is best. We will see more riders with Adidas This year. Both Bora and Movistar are sponsored by Adidas.
Personal sponsors
Not all riders stick to the team sponsors. There are always riders who only want to wear Oakley, for example, and have their own personal contract with a brand.
Those personal contracts have always been there and are probably hear to stay. Shoes, for example, are hard to make universally comfortable.
Often when a rider wears competitor’s shoes, they put a sticker over the logos. Or they provide a ‘black’- or ‘white-label’ edition. Often goes: the better the rider, the more possibilities.

As an amateur racer, I love mixing it up in the bunch. Whether it's a crit or a classic, I'm in it to win it! This year, besides being a rider myself, I'm also the team manager at the Computron Cycling Team. My weapon of choice for the road is a Felt F1, and I have a Sensa Cyclocross to tear it up in the woods. At Mantel, I'm the product manager for helmets, glasses, and power meters. I'm also responsible for the content you see at Mantel.com.
