Description

Description

The Ortlieb Vario is a high-quality bicycle bag and backpack in one. Do you commute to work, school or university by bike? Then the Vario is the ideal bike backpack for you. Between lectures or meetings, it is a handy and comfortable backpack, and on the bike it is a sturdy pannier. With the Quick-lock system you can easily attach the Vario, without tools, to the luggage carrier of your bicycle. Arrived at the right destination? Then the padded back system with sternum strap and shoulder straps can be removed from the front pocket and hooked onto the back of the Vario. From bicycle bag to backpack!

No shortage of space
The Vario offers enough space for A4 documents and notebooks and the laptop compartment is suitable for laptops up to a size of 15.4 inches. Of course, your pack lunch also easily fits in with this too. With the inner zip pocket, you can easily store smaller items without them getting lost in the spacious main compartment. With a capacity of either 20 or 26 liters you always have enough space, without the bag becoming too big or too bulky. The 26-litre bag also has two neoprene side pockets. This is useful, for example, for a compact umbrella or a drinking bottle.

A complete package
In addition to the interior space, the Ortlieb Vario has other useful features. This way you can easily attach your helmet to the Vario. This allows you to cycle safely, but you do not have to carry your helmet when you are off the bike. The rear of the Vario is also reinforced, so that the Vario keeps its shape better. The bottom also contains a sturdy plastic strip that ensures less wear on the backpack. For extra safety, the Vario is equipped with reflective strips on the sides of the backpack which make you more visible in traffic.

In short, the Vario is suitable for cyclists with a busy and varied lifestyle.

Technology

Quick lock 2.1
The Quick-lock 2.1 system is the successor to Ortlieb's Quick-lock 1 system. With this system it is very easy to attach the bag to the luggage carrier of your bicycle. The bag can be attached and detached without tools. You just need to grab the handle to open the hooks. Extra pieces are also included that make it possible to adjust the Quick-lock system to the diameter of your luggage carrier. This makes the bag more stable while cycling.

IP64
The Ortlieb Vario has an IP64 rating. This means that the Vario is almost completely dust-proof and splash-proof. So you don't have to worry about the contents getting wet in a rain shower.

Outstanding and versatile backpack

- Michel 18 June 2024

First rode my bike to a nice hike, use on the bike is as usual of such nice bags and then hiked for 7 hours with the backpack and carried very comfortably. Didn't suffer from anything and really felt like a daypack.

Pros & Cons

Compact
Flap can be used to store bike helmets
Great bag to hang from carrier
Second compartment for storing things
Very comfortable to carry as a rucksack
A hip belt would have been nice as an addition

Highly recommended for a laptop bag!

- Noud 22 May 2024

Top bag! Installation of the 3.1 system is super simple. May depend on your bike though. Bag is large and quickly converts to a backpack. Do note that the pocket in the flap is not waterproof.

Pros & Cons

Easy to install (3.1 system)
Hooks on the backpack are small
Large
Large compartment for laptop
Quick to convert to backpack
Pricey, but you pay for quality

Smart pannier and backpack in one, but not a pack mule bag

- Ruud 7 May 2024

Been looking for a long time for a bag that attaches to the carrier in one click, but can also be worn as a backpack. Clever system with the flap that quickly switches the bag between backpack and pannier. This also makes it easy to switch to backpack mode when walking during a bike ride, and the backpack straps are also not in the way (or in the spokes!!) when it's on the bike. Loading is a bit tricky because both the backpack-side and the pannier-side have a hard inner plate and there is also a laptop compartment insert. So for loading up with groceries, the bag is less suitable. Really a perfect "daypack".

Pros & Cons

good carrying comfort as backpack
really two bags in one
sturdy mounting on bicycle
laptop compartment limits access
not easy to load
