Castelli Free Aero Race S

I’d expected better from the Castelli brand, especially after the previous pair of bike shorts I’ve owned. After 1½ hours of cycling, my genitals are completely numb. The shorts can’t be returned because they’ve already been worn. In other words, you’re buying a pair of shorts for long-distance rides on a wing and a prayer, and if they don’t work out, you’ve simply wasted your money.

Lovely chamois shorts; I recently did a 160km ride in them without any problems. The legs are a bit on the long side, sitting just above the back of the knee. The shorts are quite tight-fitting, which I like. I’ve got the blue ones – a lovely colour.

Castelli trousers really do stay looking great; I swear by this brand. The chamois in the trousers stays in good condition and soft even after washing, so for me they’re top-notch. Do go for one size larger than you’re used to, though – but I already knew that.

The fit and finish of these cycling shorts are excellent. However, the chamois does not provide sufficient coverage of the soft tissue areas, leaving these areas exposed to airflow and viewing. In warm conditions, this may still offer some ventilation benefits, but in cold air, it leads to discomfort and insufficient thermal protection. An extension of the chamois at the front, as applied to other cycling shorts, could remedy this problem and significantly improve wearing comfort.

Wanted something different from the semi loose chamois from assos that seems to shift a bit on my slightly crooked body anyway. This is a nice alternative. Bib straps could be a bit firmer and fit is okay but not super. Most important for me is the chamois. It is good. Not too thick not too thin, gives good comfort.

Trousers fit fine, slightly roomier than the free aero rc old version size L. Fabric feels slightly thinner.
