How do the socks stay warm without feeling thick or heavy?

With many winter socks, warmth is created simply by adding more material, which affects the fit in your shoes. Merino wool works differently: The fibre has a naturally crimped structure that traps air, providing insulation without requiring much bulk. This allows Sportful to create these socks that offer winter warmth with a relatively light, smooth construction, rather than having to compensate with a thicker, bulkier sock. That’s also why these socks are suitable for both training and everyday use – they never feel bulky in your shoes.

Why is this more important in winter than in summer?

In summer, moisture evaporates from your skin relatively quickly due to the higher ambient temperature. In winter, however, moisture stays on your skin for longer, and it is precisely this moisture that makes your feet feel cold, even if the socks themselves are still warm enough. Merino wool solves this by actively wicking moisture away from your skin, rather than simply trapping it as many synthetic materials do. This prevents that classic cold, wet feet sensation during a winter training ride, even if you are sweating profusely.
