Pros & Cons
Pros & Cons
- Weighing just 105 grams, this Extra Light inner tube is 45 grams lighter than the standard version (Schwalbe SV17 – 150 g), which means you save 90 grams on both wheels combined.
- The SV17-EL is compatible with 28 inch wheels and 28 to 44 mm tyre widths and, therefore, suitable for road bikes and gravel bikes.
- Butyl retains air well, so you don’t need to top it up as often as you would with a latex inner tube.

The Schwalbe SV17-EL is the Extra Light version of the well-known Schwalbe SV17 inner tube. It is made of butyl, has a Presta valve and weighs 105 grams, which is an impressive 45 grams less than the standard SV17 version (150 grams). Schwalbe states that it is just as reliable as the standard inner tube.
The Schwalbe SV17-EL is compatible with tyres with 28 to 44 mm widths (ETRTO 28/44-622) on 28 inch wheels. So, you can use it on your road bike with 28 mm tyres, for a race wide setup, and with gravel tyres up to 44 mm. Thanks to its compact size, you can easily carry it as a spare in your saddle bag.
If you ride narrower 25 mm tyres, choose the Schwalbe SV20 Extra Light inner tube. If you prefer a sturdier inner tube, the standard Schwalbe SV17 version is a good alternative.
Extra Light butyl for low weight and reliability
The Extra Light construction has thinner walls than a standard butyl inner tube. As a result, it weighs 105 g instead of 150 g and takes up less space when carried as a spare. Schwalbe states that its reliability is the same as that of a standard inner tube.
SV valve for pumps with a Presta head
The Sclaverand valve, also known as a Presta or French valve, is narrower than a car valve and can withstand higher pressures. To inflate the inner tube, use a pump with a Presta head.
Compatible with:
- 28 inch wheels (622 mm)
- 28 to 44 mm tyre widths (ETRTO 28/44-622)
- Rim heights up to 25 mm for a 40 mm valve length, and up to 45 mm with a 60 mm valve length
Not compatible with:
- Wheels other than 28 inches, such as 26 or 27.5 inch
- Tyres narrower than 28 mm – if you use 25 mm tyres, for example, choose the Schwalbe SV20 Extra Light
- Tyres wider than 44 mm – if you use 45 to 47 mm tyres, choose the Schwalbe SV17
Not sure? Here’s how to check:
- Check the size printed on the sidewall of your tyre. If it says 28-622 up to and including 44-622, the inner tube will fit.
- Measure the height of your rim. The valve must protrude far enough from the rim to fit your pump head onto it. If you have a high rim, you will need a longer valve.
- If you are unsure between two valve lengths, choose the longer valve – that way, you will always be able to fit your pump head onto it.
- If your rim is higher, you will need a valve extender.>
Included as standard:
- 1x Schwalbe SV17-EL inner tube
Not included / still required or useful:
- Tyre levers, for example the BBB Cycling Easylift BTL-81
- A pump with a Presta valve head
- A tyre – the inner tube is sold separately
You can change an inner tube yourself, at home or during a ride. You will need tyre levers, such as the BBB Cycling Easylift BTL-81, and a pump with a Presta valve head. Since this Extra Light inner tube has a thinner wall, take extra care not to pinch it between the tyre and the rim.
- Check the inside of your tyre for glass, thorns and sharp edges before fitting the new inner tube.
- Take the SV17-EL inner tube with you as a spare; it is compact and weighs just 105 grams.
