Polartec AirCore fabric with electrospun membrane

This 219 g fabric is used all over the jacket and combines warmth with exceptional breathability thanks to a membrane that allows air to pass through while keeping out wind and light rain.

What makes an electrospun membrane different from a standard water-repellent layer?

A standard DWR coating (as found in many wind jackets) sits as a layer on top of the fabric and can wear off over time and with repeated washes, after which the fabric starts to absorb water rather than repel it. An electrospun membrane has a different structure: It consists of a network of ultra-fine fibres that form a physical barrier against wind and water droplets, while still leaving space between the fibres for air circulation and water vapour to escape from your skin. This is why Castelli calls this "industry-leading breathability": You are protected from the elements without ending up sweating and staying damp inside the jacket, which is what happens with less breathable wind jackets.

The waist fits snugly and keeps cold air out without the need for a thick elasticated band that can dig into your skin.

Why is a well-fitted waist important in a winter jacket?

When cycling, you are bent forwards, which means that with a loose-fitting waist, a gap can easily form between your jacket and your bib shorts or tights as soon as you lean forward. Cold air blows in through that gap, right onto your lower back, which can become uncomfortable on longer rides. The raw-cut, flat finish of the Espresso 2's waistband is designed to stay snug even in a bent-over riding position, without the need for a tight elastic band that may eventually start to dig in or pinch.

• Temperatures between 4°C and 12°C – everyday winter rides;
• Light rain en route.

• Prolonged, heavy rain and temperatures at the lower end of the range – in such conditions, a jacket with a higher waterproof rating is a better choice;
• Temperatures below 4°C – in such conditions, you will need one or more extra layers under the jacket.

• Wash the jacket inside out at a maximum of 30°C and use a sports laundry detergent for best care of the Polartec AirCore fabric and the membrane.
• Leave to air dry; the tumble dryer will damage the water-repellent coating.
• Wear an extra layer under the jacket as soon as the temperature drops towards freezing.
