Pros & Cons

Pros & Cons

  • Schwalbe's Aerothan Race is the ultimate lightweight inner tube (only 41 grams) for road bikes.
  • Thanks to the elastic material the Aerothan inner tube is highly puncture and snakebite resistant.
  • The Aerothan Race, including the valve, is made from 100% recyclable plastic.
  • Compared to a butyl inner tube, the Aerothan Race is much smaller and will fit perfectly in a back pocket or saddle bag!
  • Due to its outstanding heat resistance this inner tube can be used both with rim and disc brakes.
  • Important: Do not inflate further than 0.3 bar outside the tyre as deformations may develop.

Description

Description

The Schwalbe Aerothan redefines the inner tube! By using a completely new type of plastic, Schwalbe has brought together the most opposite characteristics of an inner tube: low rolling resistance, low weight and high puncture resistance. To summarize: The Aerothan combines the puncture resistance of butyl tubes with the rolling resistance and weight of latex tubes.

The Schwalbe Aerothan Race is designed for use on road bikes and for road bike riders for whom every second and every gram count. With two Aerothan Race inner tubes you can easily save 100 grams compared to butyl tubes without sacrificing puncture resistance. You can also rely on the Aerothan Race in extreme conditions. Thanks to its excellent heat resistance, it will give everything on fast and long descents to get you safely, and as quickly as possible, to the bottom of the mountain, even when you have rim brakes.

Compact size
The Aerothan Race is not only much lighter than comparable butyl tubes, but also much more compact because the material is less thick than butyl. This makes the Aerothan a very handy product to be taken as a spare in a saddle bag or back pocket of your jersey. If you want to bring even less with you, you can also repair the Aerothan on the road with Schwalbe Glueless Patches, which you simply stick on the Aerothan without sanding it first. Do make sure the inner tube is clean before applying the patch.

100% recyclable
An Aerothan inner tube is 100% recyclable. Not only the tube itself is made of thermoplastic polyurethane, but so is the valve, from the cap to the valve core. As such, the whole product can be recycled. However, an Aerothan inner tube cannot be reused as an inner tube, but it can be used as an insulating material, for example. So, when you choose Aerothan, you choose durability!

Technology

Thermoplastic polyurethane: Aerothan
Schwalbe, in co-operation with BASF, has completely revised the Aerothan to meet all the specific requirements of an inner tube. For example, this thermoplastic polyurethane now has excellent heat resistance, which means that it can be used with rim brakes without any problems. The elasticity and durability of the material also make this inner tube very puncture resistant. Thanks to its high resilience and unique tensile strength, the Aerothan will stretch when meeting a sharp object, which reduces the chance of penetration significantly. Another great property of the Aerothan is that it cannot burst during cycling. Thus, you will never lose control of your bike because all the air suddenly escapes from your tyre. Rather, the Aerothan deflates slowly so that you can stop safely.

Compatibility

The Aerothan Race is suitable for 28 inch tyres with widths between 23 and 28 mm. It weighs a mere 41 grams.
As the Presta valve is 40 mm long, you will have to use a valve extender for high rims. This is possible thanks to the removable valve core.

More expensive, not better

- Martijn 9 April 2024

Bought as a replacement for a butyl inner tube. It was expected that this inner tube would provide a noticeable difference while riding. Fitting it is no different than usual. However, I did take more care, because it was said to be more vulnerable. With only the rear tyre changed, there is no noticeable difference while riding. What is noticeable is that it punctures quickly, at the end of the first ride, after about 45 km. For now, I will stick to butyl inner tubes.

Pros & Cons

Compact
Leaks quickly
Pricey

Cost is not worth the headache

- Kico 20 March 2024

Unimpressed. Mounts like any other inner tube. A bit more careful fitting because they are so thin and fragile. Maintains tyre pressure very poorly. Before with continental butils, check once a week and maybe add 1 bar. Now I have to check before every ride. Inflating to 80 psi before the ride. Next morning, the front tyre still has 40 psi and the rear tyre maybe 20 psi. While riding, I experience no noticeable pressure loss. I suspect that these inner tubes travel badly because problems have started to occur especially after 2 airplane trips and the bike was with them. I don't trust them for in race situations (long-distance triathlon).

Pros & Cons

Light weight
Mounts like a butil tyre if caution is taken
Cannot handle air travel
High cost
Holds pressure significantly less well
Valve inserts pop out
Very vulnerable to pinch flats

BUT...

- BENOIT 16 March 2024

More resistant to punctures in my opinion than the Revoloop brand and than a conventional chamber, but like many users, fragile at the level of the valve reinforcement on the chamber. My two chambers had this problem a month apart after a year's use. Fortunately, the leak was very slow and both times I was able to go home. Afterwards, they were easily repaired with the Super Patch Park Tool GP-2, which is really cheap, super effective and reliable over time, and is also sold on this site. So no regrets!

Highly leak-proof

- Alma 24 January 2024

Front and rear installed, all seemed to work out fine until I wanted to go cycling a week later and inflated the tyres to 5.5 bar. An hour later they were both flat.

Pros & Cons

Unfortunately unable to experience any pluses
Already punctured before I could ride it

Too expensive for its very short lifespan and apparently unsuitable for mountain riding

- E. 17 November 2023

Initial fitting was good to do but a little trickier than regular butyl. Rides just as comfortable as latex only you don't have to re-pump every day. Unfortunately after

Pros & Cons

Compact so easy to carry
Very comfortable ride
Quickly punctures at the valve
Tears at the valve
Too expensive for 2 out of 4 tyres valve torn off
