Description

The Shimano Ultegra R8100 DI2 upgrade kit is semi-wireless. The Shimano Ultegra R8100 DI2 upgrade kit gives you one of the best performances in terms of shifting and braking. Not only that, it gives you more confidence and security in the long run.

Upgrade kit
We have put together this upgrade kit especially for riders who want to choose their own cranks and rotors. It allows you to enjoy the qualities of Shimano Ultegra R8100, in the ideal configuration for you!

In principle, the electronic set-up only needs to be adjusted once for the rest of the bike's life. Maintenance of the braking system is also simplified and less susceptible to brake discs sticking or annoying noises during use.

Shifters
The ergonomics of the Shimano Ultegra R8100 shifters have been optimised and are similar to the Dura Ace R9200 Disc Di2 groupset. The Shimano Ultegra R8100 shifters' ergonomics are comfortable to hold. You can place your fingers better and you can comfortably adopt several different seating positions. The shifters are powered by button cell batteries that maintain the connection to the front and rear derailleurs. These have a battery life of about 1.5 years.

Drive train
The front and rear derailleurs' shifting speed has been increased by 58% and 45% respectively compared to previous Shimano Di2 derailleurs. Shifting under load has been optimised even more. This is immediately noticeable when getting out of the saddle on a climb or when sprinting. The groupset can be easily charged on the Shimano Ultegra R8100 rear derailleur with a charging cable that is also used for the new Shimano power meters. The junction box that used to be mounted in the frame or in the handlebar for adjustment is no longer necessary. This technology with all its adjustment possibilities is also integrated into the rear derailleur.

Disc brakes
The disc brakes have also been upgraded. The Ultegra caliper consists of 2 parts and is CNC machined. As with the Dura Ace calipers, there is 10% more space between the brake pads and the brake discs. This has ensured that the brakes do not, or hardly, rub when you are not braking. Nothing is more annoying than brake discs rubbing up during a climb or a sprint. Braking power and leverage is also noticeably improved.

Difference to Dura Ace
The difference between Ultegra derailleurs and Dura Ace derailleurs lies in the construction and materials used. The Dura Ace R9250 front and rear derailleurs weigh 96g and 215g respectively, versus Ultegra R8150 110g and 262g, resulting in a combined difference of 61g. The new Ultegra R8170 calipers weigh 282 grams per pair, compared to a pair of Dura Ace R9270 calipers weighing 233 grams. The weight difference of the shifters accounts for about 32 grams between Dura Ace ST-R9270 (350 grams) and Ultegra ST-R8170 shifters (382 grams).

Technology

Semi-wireless
This Shimano Ultegra R8100 DI2 Disc group only has a cable connection between the battery, front and rear derailleur. The shifting performance has been taken to an even higher level. Not only has the shifting speed been increased, you can now also shift more smoothly under load. When the groupset is fully charged, you can ride about 1000 kilometres. The wireless shifters contain two button cell batteries that last about 1.5 years before they need to be replaced.

Shimano DI2 app
All adjustment options such as assigning shift buttons, shifting way or adjusting shifting speed can be done through the Shimano DI2 app. The function of the shift buttons is individually adjustable. The synchronized shift or semi-synchronized shift, in which the front derailleur automatically shifts with the ideal chainline, is still possible.

Servowave
The brakes use Shimano's Servo Wave Action. This technology means that the speed at which the pistons move in decreases as the pistons get closer to the disc. This maintains the torque Shimano brakes are known for, but greatly improves the brake delivery.

Brake maintenance
Maintenance of the brakes is simplified. It is possible to bleed the brake without removing the caliper from the frame, thanks to a separate bleed port and rotary valve. A new funnel and spacer for bleeding the caliper help optimise the bleeding process.
