Pros & Cons

Pros & Cons

  • The low weight of only 1555 grams in combination with the 45mm high rim, makes the Scope S4 wheels a very good all-round wheelset that can compete with the Zipp 303.
  • The highly developed carbon brake surface can withstand temperatures of up to 280 degrees and performs well in all conditions, even in the rain!
  • The pre-installed tubeless rim tape makes the wheels tubeless in no-time; this ensures more comfort, lower rolling resistance and higher puncture resistance.
  • An extended warranty period of 3 years and a lifetime crash replacement program give you a lot of security with Scope!
  • Scope wheels are developed in the Netherlands in cooperation with Schwalbe, SKF, TU Eindhoven and TU Delft, so high quality is guaranteed.
  • There is not much choice in brake pads. For the best braking performance and long life of the rims you should use Scope brake pads.
  • The carbon rim brake structure makes this wheel less suitable for long mountain descents with the risk of blowouts or rim deformation.

Description

Description

The Scope S4 road bike wheels are a great choice if you are looking for an all-round wheelset. The Scope S4 wheels are very suitable for hilly terrain. With a weight of 1555 grams, they are very light, especially in comparison to other deep wheels. The Scope's are therefore quick to start after taking a turn or accelerating in a sprint. Thanks to the new 3-pawl hubs, the engagement is precise and durable. Whereas braking with a regular carbon brake rim is often quite scary, the S4 wheels give you a lot of confidence. The specially developed Scope brake rim in combination with Scope brake pads ensures good braking performance, even in the rain. The braking surface can withstand temperatures of up to 280 degrees Celsius. Thanks to the 45 mm deep rim, the S4s also give you an aerodynamic advantage on the flat. Scope has designed its rim to be insensitive to crosswinds. This ensures great stability at higher speeds.

The Scope S4 wheelset is equipped with durable SKF bearings with a good seal and low rolling resistance. The wheels are built on aerodynamic 45mm high rims with an external rim width of 26mm. The pre-mounted tubeless rim tape and tubeless valves allow the S4 wheels to be run tubeless. The wide rim in combination with a wider tubeless outer tyre provides more comfort, lower rolling resistance and increased puncture resistance. The weight limit for Scope S4 wheels is 95 kg. Scope is so confident of its quality that a three-year warranty is included on all wheels. In the event of a crash, it is possible to take advantage of the Scope crash replacement program.

Technology

High lateral stiffness
Scope wheels are built almost like a "system". Each part is connected to - and developed with - the complete wheel in mind. To create high stiffness, Scope optimised the flange. After all, a wide flange accounts for almost 60% of the total lateral stiffness of a wheelset. Scope has succeeded in keeping the spoke tension constant despite the use of a wide flange. The wide flange, optimal spoke tension and stiff wide carbon rim result in a very high lateral stiffness; 47-52 Nm/mm, an industry benchmark! All your energy is converted into speed.

Aerodynamic and tubeless
By compiling data collected over more than a year, Scope has been able to determine the extent to which the wind affects a wheelset. "Computational Fluid Dynamics" was then used to develop the 26mm U-shape rim to minimise the influence of air resistance and crosswind from all angles. The result; outperforming other brands. The rim profile of the rim was optimized for tubeless tyres in collaboration with TU Eindhoven and Schwalbe, while remaining compatible with all wire and folding tyres. The internal rim width is 19 mm and fits perfectly with a 25 mm tyre.

Lightweight
The Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at TU Delft helped Scope to optimise the carbon structure for strength and stiffness. Scope was able to add extra reinforcement to the rim where the spoke nipples are, while saving weight between the spoke nipples; this was achieved using Local Reinforcement Technology. Together with Delft University of Technology, Scope has developed this technology further, reducing the weight of all racing and mountain bike rims without compromising stiffness and strength.

Extreme durability
Durability is the key factor in a hub's longevity. To protect the bearings from dirt and water, Scope has developed its own system. The end caps of the shafts completely seal the hubs in addition to the seals that seal the bearings themselves. Scope uses high-quality industrial SKF bearings. All in all, this helps to optimise the durability of the hubs.

3 Years warranty
Quality is Scope's number one priority. After registering your wheelset on the website of Scope within 30 days of purchase, you activate the 3 year warranty. When registering your wheelset it is necessary to mention the serial number. This can be found on the registration card provided, the wheel box or on the rim base.

Lifetime Crash Replacement programme.
Despite its high quality, a Scope wheelset cannot always withstand the consequences of a severe crash. This is why Scope offers a lifetime crash replacement programme in addition to the 3-year guarantee. Scope gives you the chance to replace the wheel after a crash at a reduced rate.

Compatibility

• To be used with Shimano and/or SRAM 9/10/11 speed groupsets.

Delivery includes

• Scope R4C wheels
• Scope quick release skewers
• Scope carbon brake pads
• Tubeless rim tape (pre-installed)
• Tubeless valves (premounted)
• 10 speed cassette spacer
• Warranty registration card

Assembly

• Cassette remover Shimano or Campagnolo
• (possibly a torque wrench)

Installing a cassette on a wheel is easy if you have the right tools. If you purchase a cassette remover with a Shimano fit, you will be able to mount either a Shimano or Sram cassette on your rear wheel. Please note! For a Campagnolo cassette you need the Campagnolo tool. If you have a Shimano 9/10-speed cassette, first slide the spacer over the body. Then you place the cassette on the body. This can only be done in one way because of the fit of the body. Finally you turn the washer straight on by hand and tighten it with the cassette tool. Cassettes aren’t easily overtightened, but if you want you can use a torque wrench for this.

User tips

• Pay attention to the direction of travel when mounting your tyres.
• For Shimano 9/10-speed, do not forget to mount the spacer first before installing the cassette.
• Make sure the rim tape is stuck well in the rim.

Lovely wheels, stiff and fast, made for relaxed riding as well as racing!

- Christian 27 September 2023

This excellent set of carbon wheels, is the upgrade I put off for too long. I have now cycled over 2500K with them and the cycling is a world of difference. I was still riding on a set of aluminium Zondas (which I can also recommend to anyone by the way). In terms of weight, I gain little to nothing, the difference is mainly in stiffness and maintaining pace. I notice the stiffness mainly when turning on, climbing standing and riding corners at high speed. If there is any flexibility in the wheel at all, it is minimal. Nowhere does my wheel run into a brake pad, whereas I like to adjust my brakes 'tightly'. I regularly ride solo rides where you really notice whether you can easily maintain a certain pace. Of course, I cannot determine this objectively, but that there is a difference is certain for me. I get up to speed easier/faster, sit down and can keep going. We don't need to talk about the looks, the photo is proof of that. One point of interest is the bulge of the tyres. I used to ride on 28mm tyres on my Campangnolo Zondas, but with these wheels that doesn't fit. I had to go back to 25mm, because otherwise the rear tyre would hit the (direct mount) brake.
