Pros & Cons
Pros & Cons
- 60% merino wool keeps your feet warm without the sock feeling bulky inside your cycling shoes.
- A tight fit thanks to 10% elastane: no creased fabric under your foot.
- An 18 cm cuff keeps your ankle warm on cold rides.
- Merino wool is more delicate than synthetic fabrics: wash it at a low temperature and don’t tumble dry it at too high a heat, otherwise the sock will shrink.

The Castelli Logo 18 Merino Sock is the sock you reach for as soon as it gets chilly outside. With 60% merino wool in the blend, you get insulation without the sock bulging in your shoe: thin enough for a snug fit, warm enough for cold mornings on the road. The 18 cm cuff sits just above your ankle, so you won’t feel a chilly gap between your socks and trousers.
This sock is designed for cold road rides. If you mainly cycle in spring and autumn at temperatures around freezing, then this is the sock for you. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for something for warmer days, take a look at the Castelli A/C 18 Sock: the same 18 cm cuff and tight fit, but in a breathable summer fabric without wool.
Merino wool blend
60% merino wool combined with 30% polyamide and 10% elastane gives you the warmth of wool with the durability and fit of synthetic fibres. Merino wool naturally regulates moisture and temperature, so your feet stay dry and warm.
18 cm cuff
The cuff sits just above your ankle. This keeps the cold out without the need for thick winter socks, and the sock remains visible under bib shorts with short legs.
- Shoe sizes 35 to 39: choose S/M
- Shoe sizes 40 to 43: choose L/XL
- Shoe sizes 44 to 47: choose XXL
- Wash merino wool at a maximum of 30 degrees and do not use fabric softener: this clogs the wool fibres and reduces the sock’s insulating properties
- Allow the sock to air-dry rather than using the tumble dryer, as this will help maintain the fit
- Do not wear the sock under an overshoe that is too tight: this will eliminate the insulating layer of air that keeps the wool warm
- If your feet get cold easily, pair the socks with winter-suitable cycling shoes rather than a thicker pair of socks: a thicker sock in a tight shoe actually restricts blood flow
