You can do this by making a hook from an old spoke or some chain punches come with a handy hook. You hook it between the part you want to work on and thus locally remove the tension from the chain.
Measure wear regularly
A chain checker can help you see when your chain is worn out, so that you can replace it in time. These checkers can be found here
