Pros & Cons

Pros & Cons

  • The multiple versions allow every rider to pick their favourite amount of float.
  • Unworn cleats let you clip in and out easily and lock into the pedal better.
  • Each colour has its own degree of float: Red: 0 degrees, Blue: 2 degrees, Yellow: 6 degrees.
  • Yellow is for anyone starting out in cycling or not 100% sure of their cycling position.
  • Blue and Red can be used if you have done a bikefit and can be used competitively.
  • As cleats are prone to wear, they will need to be replaced every now and then.
  • Please note: These cleats can't be used as a replacement for 2-bolt Shimano SPD mountain bike cleats.

Description

Description

With these Shimano SPD-SL cleats for road bike pedals, you'll be securely fastened and will easily clip in and out of your pedal. These SPD-SL cleats are available in three variants, yellow, blue and red. These variants each have a different degree of float.

Yellow cleats
The yellow cleats have the highest degree of float. These are the standard cleats that come with most Shimano road bike pedals. These cleats have 6 degrees of float, which gives you a lot of freedom of movement when cycling. The advantage being that you can ride in comfort, and the chance of discomfort in your knees or other body parts is lower. The disadvantage is that you lose pedalling energy due to the float.
This cleat is used by many groups of road cyclists, ranging from recreational to professional. However, a lot of avid cyclists opt for a cleat with less float.

Blue Cleats
These blue cleats have 2 degrees of float, which is less than the yellow cleats. This means that the foot's freedom of movement is reduced when it's clipped into the pedal, resulting in less energy loss during cycling. The disadvantage with decreased float is that it's more difficult to find an ideal foot position while cycling, which increases the risk of knee problems. To avoid this, the cleat must be adjusted with greater precision.

Red cleats
Shimano's red cleats have no float at all. This means that the foot has no freedom of movement while you're cycling, which means that almost all energy benefits the cycling movement. This allows you to ride faster and have more control when using this pedal. That's why these cleats are often used by competitive cyclists. The disadvantage of these cleats is that they have to be finetuned very precisely. If the cleats are not properly adjusted, there's a greatly increased risk of knee complaints or problems with other body parts.

- Ruud 11 June 2024

Been using these cleats for decades. Always easy fitting. And use without knee complaints due to the slight clearance.

Pros & Cons

A nice large support. Does wear out quickly.

- Ronald 22 May 2024

In combination with Ultegra pedals, my experience is that they slip quickly over the pedal. Sometimes it looks like you're locked in, but you're not. Fine is the substantial bearing surface between pedal and cleat. Don't walk on them too much, as they wear out super fast. Fortunately, the plates are not too expensive. I experience the clearance as just right.

Pros & Cons

easy installation
good bearing surface
inexpensive
slide over Ultegra pedals
wear out super fast when you walk on them

I hardly notice the difference with the yellow plates. Now have the blue ones (2 degrees clearance) and they are fine. Do buy new ones every 8 months. With worn plates, your foot can come loose.

Pros & Cons

Fast to attach
No cheaper alternative
Wears out quickly from walking to bike stand
