The Shimano BL-MT200 brake lever lets you replace a broken or leaking lever on your hydraulic disc brake. The lever is made of steel and has space for 2 or 3 fingers. You can adjust it so that it’s easy to reach, even for smaller hands. The braking power is smooth and easy to modulate, so you won’t be startled when you brake.
This lever is suitable for your mountain bike, trekking bike or city bike fitted with a Shimano hydraulic disc brake. You can buy it separately as a front brake lever (left), a rear brake lever (right) or as a set of two. Please note: you’ll only receive the lever, without the brake hose, fluid or caliper.
Do you want to replace your entire brake system, including the hose and caliper? Then take a look at the Shimano BR-MT200 disc brake.
Bleeding the brakes with a funnel
If there’s air in your brakes, the lever will feel soft and the brakes won’t work as well. With this lever, you bleed the brakes using a funnel that you screw onto the top of the lever. The air will then rise to the top by itself. This is easier and cleaner than the old method using two syringes.
Adjustable lever reach
Using an Allen key, you can move the lever closer to or further away from your handlebars, down to a minimum of 75 mm. This ensures you can always reach it easily, even with small hands or thick winter gloves.
Shimano mineral oil
Shimano uses mineral oil instead of brake fluid (DOT). It doesn’t attract water, is less harmful to your paintwork and feels less harsh if it gets on your hands.
Fits
- Shimano hydraulic disc brakes that use mineral oil. Shimano recommends the BR-MT200 and BR-UR300 brake calipers.
- The Shimano SM-BH59 brake hose.
- Straight handlebars on a mountain bike, trekking bike or city bike.
- Front brake on the left and rear brake on the right, as is standard in Europe.
Not compatible with
- Brakes that use brake fluid (DOT), such as most SRAM brakes.
- Disc brakes with a brake cable or V-brakes.
- A racing handlebar with curved drops.
- Bikes where the front brake is on the right, as in the United Kingdom: in that case, choose the lever for the other side.
Not sure? Here’s how to check
Check your current brake lever or caliper: if it says “Shimano” and a model number such as BR-MT200, BR-MT201 or BR-UR300, then you’re sorted. The reservoir on many Shimano levers also says “Mineral oil”. If it says “DOT”, this lever won’t fit. Also check which lever you’re replacing: the left lever is usually the front brake, the right lever the rear brake.
Included as standard
- Front brake: 1 Shimano BL-MT200 brake lever (left-hand).
- Rear brake: 1 Shimano BL-MT200 brake lever (right-hand).
- Set: 2 Shimano BL-MT200 brake levers, for left and right.
Not included / still required or useful
- A brake hose (Shimano SM-BH59); if you also need a new hose, you can find it at hydraulic hoses.
- A new hose fitting and insert to connect the hose, available at brake parts.
- Shimano mineral oil and a funnel for bleeding the brakes, available at bleeding kits and disc brake oil.
- A brake caliper and disc brake rotor, if you’re replacing your entire brake system.
You can fit this grip yourself, but it’s a job best left to those with some experience of using tools. You secure the grip to your handlebars using the clamp. Then connect the brake hose using a new hose nut and insert, and bleed the brakes using mineral oil and a funnel. You’ll need Allen keys, a Torque wrench to tighten the bolts properly, a Shimano bleeding kit and Shimano mineral oil. You can read how to bleed the brakes step by step in our blog servicing hydraulic Shimano disc brakes.
- Use Shimano mineral oil only. Brake fluid (DOT) will damage the seals in the lever.
- Does your brake feel soft, or can you squeeze the lever all the way back to the handlebars? If so, there is air in the system and you will need to bleed the brakes.
- Adjust the lever so that you can easily reach it with one or two fingers whilst holding the handlebars firmly.
- Never squeeze the brake lever when the wheel is off the bike. The brake pads will slide towards each other, making it difficult to fit the disc back in.
