Pros & Cons
Pros & Cons
- Sturdy and affordable entry level mountain bike wheels.
- You can maintain the bearings yourself by applying some bearing grease to the hubs once a year for a long service life.
- The J-bend spokes add more comfort than straightpull spokes.
- The freehub body is made of steel so that the MTB cassette cannot eat into it.
- The wheels weigh more than 2100 grams, which is somewhat on the high side but not unusual in this price segment.

The Shimano MT500 29” MTB wheels are a great choice for those looking for an entry-level model or a replacement set for the standard wheels that came with their mountain bike. The MT500 wheels have wide rims for stability through the corners and on the descents. The well-known cup & cone system in the hubs ensures smooth rolling and lasts long. And if you do need to replace something, it is cheap and simple to do so. The long J-bend spokes add comfort to the wheels and can handle a maximum rider weight of 120 kg. If your current wheels are worn out, the Shimano MT500 MTB wheels are a great replacement set in all respects.
Cup & cone bearings
This type of bearing turns better at different degrees of angle than industrial bearings, which are much less capable of handling lateral loads in the longer term. Cup & cone bearings are easier to maintain, adjustable and much more durable if properly maintained.

Type of freehub body for 12-speed
Some 12-speed cassettes must be mounted onto the 10/11-speed Shimano/SRAM freehub bodies. They are the SRAM NX Eagle PG-1230 cassettes and virtually all other 12-speed MTB cassettes whose smallest cog is an 11. MTB cassettes whose smallest cog is a 10 require a specific freehub body; for Shimano this is a Micro-Spline freehub and for SRAM it is an XD freehub.
