With the Shimano XT RD8000 you can change gears directly and smoothly, this will save you a lot of energy on the trails or single tracks. The M8000 features Shimano's optimized SHADOW RD+ technology with a soft angle and a low profile design. This results in smoother shifting and an improved chain stability. The renewed derailleur wheels with a larger tooth profile ensure a improved performance and effective shifting. The XT M8000 rear derailleur is compatible with direct mount systems and 1 × 11, 2 × 11 or 3 × 11 setup.
A problem that crops up often is a skew derailleur hanger. It can happen if the derailleur knocked into something, for example in the case of a fall on the bike. Luckily it can be fixed! You can read more here.

Just like the chain, the jockey wheels on a derailleur get super dirty. As a result the shifting is not as good and it does the lifespan of your derailleur no good.
