Very tough rim, not so impressed with the freehub
These came fitted to my bike when I bought it and I've now covered about 6,000 miles (9,600 km) of regular commuting over some pretty rough roads in and out of London. So, first the good: The rims are amazingly tough and managed to survive the beating they've taken very well. I recently had a big accident which broke a chain stay on my carbon frame and actually put a small dent in the rim and it was still barely out of true. The wheel bearings, too, have stood up pretty well to this. They were never up to, say, DT Swiss standard but they've been fine for a commuter bike. So on to the bad: the freehub has obviously taken on water and the bearings are now sounding horrible; I've also had the occasional slipping pawl for some time now. The good news is that you can easily get a replacement freehub and it only requires a big hex wrench to fit. However the thread that holds the rear axle together is not adequate to tighten it up properly so it's only the QR skewer that's holding it together, so if I did replace the freehub I would also need to replace the axle and it's just more money than these wheels warrant. Also, the anodizing on the rim is a rough matte finish which I've found impossible to clean properly. On a purely personal note I don't really like such deep section rims as I find they catch the wind rather, but I wouldn't mark them down for that.

Sexy looking wheels
They feel very quick when cycling above 20-25kmph. The noise from the hub sounds great. I covered 280km the weekend I first rode these and they never skipped a beat. The rims did wear to reveal bare metal but that was expected. My only gripe is there’s a tiny bit of play in the rear hub, I’m taking a mm or less laterally. Some say this is the norm but non of my fellow riders have play nor have I ever had play in any other of my previous wheels. It’s one to keep an eye on.

Really nice set of wheels
Wheels are great value for money - look great on the bike and the sound of the free hub is great. Shame the anodised breaking surface loses its colour so quickly but it is just aesthetic.

Really good set of wheels - run true, durable, responsive and great value. Only downside is the anodised braking surface loses its colour quickly but that is only cosmetic and doesn’t affect performance. Overall, I would highly recommend

Nice looking wheels.
Wheels arrived romptly and in perfect condition. Look superb on my bike and a nice deep, aero profile. The braking surface has started to lose its black finish but only to be expected and does not appear to be an issue. They appear to be well made and, while they're not the lightest wheels, they are certainly not heavy. Very pleased with them. Would definitely use Mantel again, good price and prompt delivery.
