The extra shifters in the Sram Red eTAP group: Blip. These are buttons to change gears. These are attached with cables, and a small plug in the left and right levers. These buttons work the same way as the normal shifters.
Use the left Blip to shift to a lighter gear (rear derailleur), the right Blip to shift to a heavier gear (rear derailleur). Push both Blips to operate the front derailleur. A very innovative group.
