With the Shimano SM-SH41 SPD-SL --> SPD Adapter you can make your road shoes suitable for a Shimano SPD cleat. Road shoes (SPD-SL) have 3 holes on the underside of the shoe to attach the cleat. However, an SPD (mountain bike) cleat has two fixing screws. Thanks to this adapter you can mount this SPD cleat on shoes with a SPD-SL fit.
