Brand Shimano
Type of brakeRimbrake

The Shimano Ultegra R8000 brakes have been given more tyre clearance so they can take tyres up to 30 mm wide! This also improves brake leverage, offering increased brake performance even on wheels with wider rims. Furthermore, for the Ultegra R8000 brakes the Shimano engineers have tried to improve the aerodynamics of the brakes. They succeeded by turning the lever used to adjust cable tension inward by one quarter.

Shimano = kwaliteit!

Even more powerful, with drawbacks.

Had to upgrade from R700 long reach calipers, due to a frame change. The 8000s are a significant step up in power and modulation. I'm less impressed by the quick release, which does not open the caliper up enough to clear my 25mm Pro4s. That forces a twiddle of the cable adjuster to clear the tyre. This works ok, but frankly feels low rent, with a coarse and clunky feel. Also, there is still no protective buffer to prevent frame damage when the front wheel swings round. Not a lot to ask.

  • Powerful
  • Well modulating

  • Poor quick release clearance
  • No protection against frame damage
