Cleats are the link between your cycling shoes and bike pedals. Make sure that your cleats are the same brand and type as your bike pedals, and that you are aware of their degree of play or leeway. A degree less or more can make all the difference in the world especially if you easily get knee complaints or other aches and pains. As there are different types of pedals on road and mountain bikes, there are different types of cleats as well. The most popular cleats are Shimano SPD for mountain bikes, and Shimano SPD-SL for road bikes.
