Small but nice!

- Kees Peter, 24 September, 2023

Quick commissioning with immediate sensor recognition. The mounts, with or without a bar, are reliable, nothing wobbles! A metal mount would be more helpful, as these can be damaged more quickly in the event of a fall. Data such as temperatures and altitude are consistent. All in all, the purchase was at a fair price!

Clear buy recommendation, much more is not possible !

- Matthias, 19 September, 2023

The most important purchase criterion was actually the stated battery life. It seems that this can actually be achieved. After several other navigation devices, the Edge 830 immediately convinces in all respects! It is quite annoying when the navigation device gives up far too early on longer tours with the racing bike because the battery is empty (previously 100 % charged!). Yes, of course you can take a power bank with you, but what else do you have to carry around.....? Here, the rider is sure to give up first before the navigation system gives up!

Meets our stated goals and requirements.

- Greet en Marcel Jagt, 23 August, 2023

The Edge 830 is the replacement for my Edge 705 which I used gratefully from 2008. A world of difference and for my activities. Heart rate and candance meter (ANT) found instantly. Used on Race, ATB and E-bike. Of course it takes some getting used to all the newer applications. Fun to discover. Also bought one for my wife and she too is happy with it.

Pros & Cons

Charging to Garmin Connect and Strava is fine
Clear and classifiable screens

It's a fine thing and you can do a lot with it. But it takes some effort to master it. The menu and buttons take a while to figure out. I'm pretty handy with devices, but I didn't drive off with it in one go. It comes with two good mounts to put it on your bike, but no protective case.

Very satisfied with this purchase

- Bart, 31 May, 2022

Previously used the 810 and very satisfied with it. Doubting between this 830 and the 1030. Price difference made me choose the 830. Screen is big enough for me and very bright. Battery life with the right settings is more than enough for a very long day on the bike. The three preset profiles Race, MTB and Gravel are also very handy. Preset maps are also very satisfactory.

One of the better garmin navigation`s out there!

- Fabian, 31 May, 2022

A fantastic Garmin, does what it is supposed to do. I had the Edge Explorer before and this Garmin is so much better and faster. The battery lasts at least 15 - 20 hours! Made 4 long rides of +4 hours and still had 32% battery left. The navigation is fast and if you bike wrong then the route is reset in seconds. A minus point of this garmin could be for some people that the screen is a bit small. i myself do not experience this as a minus point because it is easy to read. but maybe for some people it is on the small side.

Pros & Cons

Long battery life
Quick navigation redirection if you cycle wrong
Screen dims automatically and is always easy to read
Maybe a ''small'' screen

Irritating to navigate with

- Gerard, 21 April, 2022

I bought this device to follow multi-day routes and to navigate to a poi (e.g. a hotel) in between. However as soon as you deviate from a route and want to pick it up again further on, it sends you back to the point where you left the route for a long time or it recalculates a new route to your end point. This has been complained about a lot on the forum and it seems to be fixed in the 1030plus but not in the 830. Also, the readability is substandard. I regret this purchase, a smartphone with a power bank works much better: there are legion of apps that do it better.

Pros & Cons

Battery life
Compact
Waterproof
Poor recalculate function
Readability

4 / 5

I would buy it again.

- Ronald, 15 April, 2022

All in all a fine device that does what you expect for such a price. Would buy it again. Navigates very accurately, the software could only be clearer if you have 2 turns in quick succession. The 2nd turn is not indicated on the first and you run the risk of missing the 2nd turn because the system has to finish the 1st turn. This is especially if you cycle on data screen. If you cycle on map, there is no such problem. Then you can just see the sequel.

Pros & Cons

Easy to read in bright sunlight
Fast recalculation.
Navigates accurately
Screen easily configurable to suit your needs
Very low battery consumption.
Screen is just big enough, could be bigger

- Maurits, 2 April, 2022

Bike rides on road bike. Good interface with heart rate monitor. Nice touch screen operation. Quickly calculates a new route if you want to ride differently than planned. For planning routes I use the Komoot app. Works better for cycling than Garmin's own route planner and Connect app.

Pros & Cons

Good GPS, in mountains and forests no problem
Good readable image, also in the sun
Long battery life, 9 hours of cycling was fine
Quick connection to Garmin Connect, Strava and Komoot
Sturdy mounting on the handlebar
Takes a while to find all options in the menus

Edga 830 and Vivosmart 4, should have done it a lot sooner !

- Ruud, 2 April, 2022

After several years of working with a Polar V650 and A370, I was completely fed up with the software and sync problems that occurred regularly after updates. After some searching I finally found the Edge 830. So many possibilities that it takes some time to figure it all out, but in the end it is all very logical and it works without a hitch. Starting a ride is easy and informing the home front also works perfectly! Eventually I bought the Garmin speed and cadence sensors because they are very easy to transfer to another bike, and you can simply replace the battery if necessary. Then I also switched to a smarttracker, the Vivosmart 4 by Garmin, because I can control everything in one app. I am very happy with this switch!

Pros & Cons

Interface with mobile and computer that just works!
Lots of possibilities

Does well what it needs to do

- Cor, 30 March, 2022

I was completely new to Garmin so I did spend a few hours fiddling to understand the logic of them. In combination with your computer (phone) this is good to do further but before you cycle away so dive in a bit. Once on the road Garmin shows its value well and you can navigate fine and or track your progress well. I have no idea how other navigation systems solve this but if you deviate from the route the solutions are not always convenient but could also be my inexperience.

Pros & Cons

Good battery
Has everything you would expect from a navigation
In combination with other apps everything is possible
Many possibilities so you have to figure it out
Price is quite high
Quite a small screen if you need reading glasses

mixed feelings

- Derk-Jan, 13 February, 2022

I hesitated over the Garmin 830 or the Yahoo Roam when purchasing. Finally chose the Garmin because of good test results, especially when it comes to navigation qualities. Uploading routes via Garmin connect is fine. I do not create my routes in the Garmin connect, because too user unfriendly. I recommend Komoot to everyone. Simple and logical. Garmin often makes strange suggestions, especially if you let Garmin plan a random round trip. You are presented with many major roads with bike paths, while there are dozens of alternatives with quiet roads. What I find particularly disturbing is that after driving the wrong way, Garmin always wants to drive back, while very often the route can be picked up a little further on. And before it finds the route again, it takes a long time. And this while its speed was praised! Many people find the menu structure user-friendly. I find it far from that. This is my second Garmin (previously I had an 810), but Yahoo really does it better. In conclusion: Of course the device does a lot of things right and I certainly enjoy it. But sometimes it does incomprehensible things and I find it not really user friendly. Not good enough for a leading brand, especially considering the price, as Garmins are the most expensive in this segment. I give it a barely satisfactory rating.

Pros & Cons

Battery lasts long enough
Indicates routes well
Many training possibilities
If it does everything right, it is worth the price, but
Sometimes incomprehensible in terms of connectivity (not or lasts)
When driving the wrong way it is not 'smart

A 10 as a cycling computer, a 4 for navigation functions

- Koen, 12 September, 2021

Great how Garmin continues to evolve. This bike computer has about the same features as high-end training watches. The integration of, for example, Strava segments, training goals and synchronization with wifi/bluetooth are also commendable. The navigation functions are 10 years behind. Unbelievably how bad. The bottom line is that you can only pre-load a route or enter one end point. - During the ride deviate from your route with an additional 'via' point? Impossible - Creating a new route during your ride via a particular route? Impossible. - Adjust routing criteria? Hardly - Adjust sound notifications? Impossible, it is unnecessary noise or nothing. - Adjust detail level of maps? Impossible I have been riding with a smartphone in a drybag on the handlebars with OSMAnd navigation on it for 10 years. That had better features 10 years ago.

- Henk, 8 September, 2021

Previously had a Garmin Edge 1000. Now bought the Edge 830 touchscreen. Found the Edge 1030 too expensive because all features relevant to me are also on the 830 touchscreen. Bought the touchscreen version because the navigation capabilities are more extensive than the 830 without touchscreen. Navigating back to route works very quickly. The Edge 830 navigates faster than the 1000 and has more features. The screen is slightly smaller than the 1000 but this does not seem to be a problem in practice. The battery lasts longer than that of the 1000.

Nice product, elevation profiles are super. At first a little hassle with syncing with Strava but eventually runs perfectly. Live segments don't come through very well yet (or I don't know how), but of course you need a paid Strava subscription for this too. Beautiful thing! But very mediocre map and navigation

- Joost, 23 June, 2021

Owned this Garmin since last May. It gives nice performance statistics and training options. Battery life is also fine. I once cycled 200km in 8 hours (screen light low) and I still had plenty of battery left. Drawbacks in my opinion: - map display: I expected to see well which villages I would cycle to or where I would be. This is definitely not the case. In fact, you don't see any of that. Was very disappointing to me. Google maps is much nicer and more informative. - The navigation doesn't make any sense. You can choose all kinds of options, but even then the garmin sends you with a weird detour via the craziest roads. Also recalculating the route is not useful. Most of the time it just sends you back. That does not work fine. Accidentally now downloaded Openfietsmap as a free map and put it on the Garmin. Now villages etc. are suddenly nicely visible. This map is much better! And I just tested it: navigation is now also normal, via fine bike paths in a reasonably straight line. Just as Google Maps would send you, more or less. This is definitely recommended!

Fantastic! Top navigation, simple to use, accurate, practical, just great!

- Gerjan, 17 October, 2020

Very satisfied with the Garmin Edge 830. The navigation works very accurately, is easy to set up and what I am especially satisfied with is the quick recalculation of the route if you are wrong. In addition, super many handy features (back-to-start, suprise-me; climb pro, etc) and with the Garmin Connect App everything is very easy to set up. A must for me is the touchscreen that even with rain it just acts like it's dry. (I didn't expect this) Am now saving up for the sensors because it is just even more of a pleasure to get on the bike!

Bright screen
Convenient functions

Versatile, fast and safe "assistant" that gets you from A to B!

- Pierre, 24 September, 2020

The Garmin 830 is versatile, clear, fast and an inspiring assistant on the handlebars. The touch screen, map files and color sharpness and the speed at which the GPS tracks your movement don't take you by surprise. There is plenty of time to pay attention to the road and its -users. The Garmin brings you safely through your route or to the specified destination. A fine step forward compared to the 810 and 820.

Top Navigation

- Marcel, 23 September, 2020

Fine accurate navigation, indicates turns with beeps so you don't have to look at your screen all the time. The surprise me function is nice and it is also easy to create routes yourself with the garmin app. The climb pro function is very useful when cycling in the mountains. There are many more functions available. I think it is a good device and I am very happy with it.

Perfect replacement for my Edge 800

- Roy, 21 August, 2020

Bought the Edge 830 as a replacement for the 800. Clearly noticeable that big steps have been made, design is more compact, screen is nicer and works much better. Synchronization with the phone is perfect and the amount of data is much greater than the 800, GPS is quickly found. Incident detection is also very nice, you hope never to have to use it but an automatic SMS in case of a crash is a nice idea.

Pros & Cons

Design
Fast GPS fix
Fast sync with phone

Used for bicycle trip The Hague - Porto: great GPS with clear directions, good battery life and easy to read. Alternative routes are immediately indicated. Downloading cycling routes is simple and clear. Silicone case also proves its usefulness against drops and scratches. Makes the cycling vacation so much more enjoyable!

The Garmin 830 starts up nice and fast and is nice and small, but with a good screen. Saved routes are easy to find and easy to follow on the bike. You have to get used to all the features it has. Unfortunately, the Garmin App is currently down and the statistics are not available. Otherwise, this device received a 9.
